11th Grade English

Required Reading For All Students Taking English 11 During The 2018-2019 School Year

First: Read The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The Road is a post-apocalyptic novel about a man and his son’s struggle to survive during their journey to the sea.

The Road is available in local libraries, in bookstores, and online (Amazon.com). It is recommended that students purchase the book as they will need to have it in class for discussions, classwork assignments, and possibly projects. It is imperative that students acquire the book in plenty of time to read it over the summer. It is not a good idea to wait until the week before school starts.

NEXT: Respond to at least two of the writing prompts below regarding the book you chose to read. Each response should be at least one complete, well-developed paragraph (7-10 sentences). Academic honesty is expected and the New Kent academic policies will be followed.

Prompts:

  • What did you like/dislike about this novel? Support your answer with at least one specific example from the text.
  • Describe someone or something you would like to know more about in the novel. What about this person or event intrigued you? What more would you like to know?
  • Explain a connection you made between the novel and present day or another novel you’ve read. Use at least one specific example to support your connection.
  • Explain any new insights or understandings that you have after reading the novel.Include at least one specific example from the novel.

Your response may be typed or handwritten. You may use the Google Doc template below to record your response. After opening the Google Doc, select File and then Make a Copy. Give the new document a title with your name in it.
