Library Programs

We offer many different opportunities

to encourage reading and citizenship in our

River Otter Library!

Library Helpers

    • Students in grades 4th and 5th are invited to apply.
    • 25 students will be selected to help with the managing of the library
    • Only students that display good citizenship and organizational skills will be selected.

Blue, Silver, and Gold Cards

    • Students in grades 3rd-5th are encouraged to read and return books. Once students have read and returned 75 books, shown mastery of the library catalog system, and displayed proper library behavior they receive their card.
    • Privileges received with a card:
      • checkout of 1 additional book
      • able to cut the line
      • able to check out two books in a series
      • invited to new book previews

Virginia Reader's Choice Program

    • Ten books are nominated by the Virginia State Reading Association
    • Purpose:
      • to encourage young readers to become better acquainted with contemporary books with outstanding literary appeal,
      • to broaden students’ awareness of reading as a life-long pleasure,
      • to encourage reading aloud in classrooms as a means of introducing reading for pleasure, and
      • to honor favorite books and their authors.
    • To become a qualified voter, a participant must be exposed to at least five of the nominated books in their entirety by reading them, hearing them read aloud, or a combination of the two.
    • All books must be read by March 1st
    • Open to students in grades 3rd-5th
    • Students have until April 30th

Bingo for Books

    • Students and Families are invited to attend our evening program where we gather to play bingo and a receive a free book to enjoy together!

Mock Caldecott

    • Each year at the end of January, the American Library Association hands out the awards for the previous year. Caldecott, Newberry, and many more will be announced! To celebrate this event, we have our own school wide mock Caldecott awards in the library. Students will preview 10 books published in 2014 and select the book they think should be the winner. Then we will watch the ceremony to see if we picked the winning title!

Mystery Books

    • Classic books that students are missing out on are wrapped up and displayed for students to select. The rules are:
      • you may select one book per library visit
      • you may select a book from your grade level shelf
      • you must read at least 3 pages before returning the book to the library

Dr. Seuss Celebration

    • Join us as we celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday! We will be reading many of his classic books, playing Seuss Bingo, and celebrating all that is Dr. Seuss!

Book Tasting Events

    • Students are given over 50 books to sample in a fun "restaurant" like experience
    • Gives everyone a chance to preview and explore new books

Book Swap

    • Students are given a chance to get some "new to you" books to enjoy over the summer.
    • Students may bring in up to 15 books that meet the swap criteria to trade
    • Students come back on swap day to select the same type and number of books that they donated.
