Our Namesake

black and white photo of students and a teacher in the 1800s

We proudly bear the name of a legendary educator.

Alice Elizabeth Curtis, "Lizzie", taught in the first schoolhouse built in our area, the Blue Mound School. Prior to the schoolhouse being built, Miss Curtis taught her students in the home of a Haslet community member. In the late 1870s, members of the Haslet community raised $150 to construct the Blue Mound School. Pictured below is the Blue Mound School (Miss Curtis is not pictured in this photo).

It is an honor to be named after an educator who left a strong legacy. We strive to be legendary leaders, like our namesake Lizzie Curtis.

Social Emotional Learning at Curtis Elementary

We value the importance of Social Emotional Learning at Curtis Elementary. Teaching students specific skills in this area takes place every morning during our allotted morning meeting time. This year as a district we are focusing on self-awareness and self- management for social emotional learning. We will focus on one competency skill each week that pertains to self-awareness or self-management.

Flower with 6 petals. Each petal contains an SEL characteristic: Self-Awareness, Relationship Skills, Personal Well-Being, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Responsible Decision-Making. Middle of flower says: Grow-Family, School, Community. Social Emotional Learning Framework. It's up to me. It's up to you. It's up to all of us.
