What's New

Multicultural Night - THANK YOU

We would like to thank all of our families who participated in our 1st Annual Multicultural Night. It was an amazing night of celebrating the beautiful multicultural community that we have at Lizzie Curtis. The booths were so educational. We loved seeing the photos, art, and artifacts presented...the demonstrations were also fantastic! We learned to Salsa Dance and a tradtional FolK Dance - we also saw some terrific dances from around the world. Our students and parents truly shined! We can't wait to see what next year brings!

If you'd like to see pictures from the event, check out our Facebook post here.

Kindergarten Round Up - April 25th-29th

Do you have a student that will be entering kindergarten next year, or do you have a friend or neighbor that has an incoming kindergarten student?

Students need to be registered online. Kindergarten registration opens online on April 25th.

Families can bring enrollment documents to our front office during the week of April 25th-29th from 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM.

Come tour the building and meet the Kindergarten Teachers, Specials Teachers, Principals, and other LCE Staff on Tuesday, April 26 from 5:30-7:00. We will have staff on hand to accept enrollment documents. There will be photo opportunities and fun activities for our youngest Legends to participate in...it is sure to be a special evening!

Teacher Appreciation Week

We have the BEST teachers around at Lizzie Curtis. They are LEGENDARY for sure! Please mark your calendars for the week of May 2nd - 6th for Teacher Appreciation Week. Please write a note of encouragement or send some kind words to your teacher to show them that you appreciate them.

Northwest Reads

This year Northwest Reads is back in person! This annual NISD reading event provides community members with an opportunity to inspire young NISD students to become lifelong readers across our 20 elementary schools.

Join us April 22nd as we welcome community members into our classrooms either in person or virtually to read to our students! Community members will be able to engage with the class and share why reading is important to them!

Welcome Dr. Hicks, NISD's next Superintendent of Schools

The Northwest ISD Board of Trustees has unanimously voted to name Dr. David Hicks as the lone finalist for the next superintendent of the school district, placing a proven leader at the helm of the fastest-growing North Texas school system.

Dr. Hicks comes from Sherman ISD, which he has led as superintendent for the past six years. Prior to that, he oversaw all secondary schools at Denton ISD, giving him a strong familiarity with fast-growth school districts. As a superintendent, he has focused on fostering top-tier academic and extracurricular programs, ensuring the needs of every child are met, and creating a long-term vision for district growth.

Summer Opportunity - Camp Invention

Camp Invention® is coming to Northwest Independent School District!

In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame® (NIHF), Haslet Elementary School and Carl E. Schluter Elementary School are pleased to offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention® program to children entering 1st through 6th grade. This exciting, weeklong summer adventure provides opportunities for open-ended, hands-on exploration of science, technology, engineering and more! Rotating through a variety of exciting activities each day, children have fun collaborating with friends, thinking creatively and inventing their own solutions to real-world challenges.

The week for Haslet begins on June 6, 2022 and goes to June 9, 2022 with Rachel Pruitt serving as Director. The week for Schluter begins on June 13, 2022 and goes to June 16, 2022 with Jennifer Hammond serving as Director. The all-new 2022 Explore program will thrill both new and returning campers with an expedition full of far-reaching explorations, fascinating discoveries and exhilarating “a-ha” moments!

During this dynamic, high-energy program, young innovators will:

• Dive into cutting-edge ocean research as they adopt their own robotic fish, design and patent aquatic plants, and take their fish friend home in a mini tank.

• Discover real space exploration technology when they create Spacepacks and AstroArm devices, mine an asteroid and observe erupting ice volcanoes.

• Combine science and art to build their own robotic artist, engage in design thinking, make spin art and learn how inventions can change the way people create.

• Experiment with the fun of physics, engineering and gaming as they design, build and test their own mega marble arcades.

Early registration discounts available! Register using SUM25 by March 31 to save $25, or SUM15 by May 18 to save $15 off the $260 registration fee.

Availability is limited, so visit invent.org/mylocalcamp or call 800-968-4332 to secure your child’s spot today!

SEL Learning Targets

In April we will be talking about the virtue of:

SEL Focus: Be Self Aware

Honesty

Explanation

This month we’re talking about Honesty! The dictionary defines it as: “fairness and straightforwardness of conduct; adherence to the facts.” The definition we are using in class is:

Honesty: living truthfully in your words and actions and thoughts!

Honesty is a lot more than just telling the truth – it is also about thinking and acting in a way that feels consistent, kind, and sincere. What do we do with honest thoughts that aren’t very nice? How do our actions in Honesty help or hurt our relationships. Over the course of the month, we will talk about people from Emily Bronte to Jackie Robinson who lived out Honesty in their words and actions. We discover new games and techniques to make us more honest competitors and more thoughtful friends. It will be a time of challenging, but rewarding conversations – thanks for being a part of them!

  • I will be able to accomplish a goal I set for myself.

  • I will be able to accomplish a goal I set for myself.

  • I will know the difference between a healthy and unhealthy choice.

Home Questions You Could Ask -

Conversation Starters

  • Here’s a scenario: Your friend June told you that your friend Rachel has been talking about you behind your back. When you ask Rachel if that’s true, she said no, that she didn’t say anything. What do you do?

  • Sometimes, people cheat or do no not play by the rules when they are playing a game. How do you think they feel if they win the game by cheating? Do you think it is better to cheat and win or be honest and lose?

  • Share a time when someone was dishonest with you. What happened? How did that impact your relationship with the other person?
