What We Are Learning About
Reading: In reading we will be finishing up our unit on Readers have Big Jobs to do and begin an author study on Pat Mora.
Writing: Extra! Extra! Read all about it!!! First graders are writing reviews. This is a very interactive unit for the students, in which they give their opinion in the form of a review. The students will be writing reviews over vacations, restaurants, toys, and even types of pets. Later in the unit, the students will write book reviews. Keep an eye on Seesaw for their reviews! We are always reiterating first grade conventions.
Social Studies: We will be comparing the present to the past, and talking about how different aspects of our life are changing over time.
Math: We are working through Module 7 - building mental addition strategy competency (make-ten, doubles, counting on, properties) and introducing visual fractions of one-half and one-fourth. We will also begin Module 8 - building subtraction strategy competency and identifying time on the half-hour with both digital and analog clocks.
Science: This month we will be finishing up our Seasons unit and will be transitioning into learning about Objects in the Sky. We will be learning about the phases of the moon, activities that take place during the day vs. night, and observing the sun and stars.
