Helpful 0800 numbers

0800 358 5453 This is the number for the general COVID helpline. It’s run by Healthline and is the general go-to. It is also the helpline for members of the public undertaking the case self service tool, or needing support to provide this information.

0800 222 478 This is the helpline for anyone in the public needing support to upload or notify a positive RAT test.

0800 512 337 This is the COVID Welfare Phone Line. The number can be given out to anyone isolating with welfare concerns. It’s open seven days a week. This number is also included in the initial email sent to cases. Run by MSD.

What do I do if my child tests positive?

  • Advise the principal Contact the principal as soon as possible after you have been informed of a positive test at. wgray@nis.school.nz

Keep your child at home and isolate for 10 days. Testing will need to take place on Day 3 and Day 10.

Do I need to provide anything before my child is able to return to school?

  • No, students can return to school after 10 days if they are symptom-free.

What do the household/whānau members of a positive case need to do?

  • Self isolate for 10 days and get tested if you have symptoms.

  • If your child does not live in the house of the close contact they come to school.

  • Anyone who is a close contact with a non-household member does not need to self-isolate. This will include positive cases in your child's class.

(If you develop any symptoms you should get a test.)

How does the school work out who is a Close Contact?

There is detailed guidance around this and a range of criteria. Without going into detail we follow the guidance of the Ministry of Education who have a clear flow chart to follow

What actions does the school take when there is a positive case?

NIS follows the response plan based on the guidance from the Ministry of Education:

  • Seek confirmation of the positive case and when the infectious period was, and follow the Ministry of Education advice.

What is NIS doing to keep my child safe?

  • All staff, volunteers, contractors on-site during school hours are vaccinated.

  • All rooms have good ventilation.

  • Staff and students are wearing masks.

  • Hand santiser is provided in every learning area.

  • We have staggered break times and areas to assist with contract tracing and minimise contact between large groups of students.

My child needs to isolate at home. What support will school provide around teaching and learning?

  • Teachers and students are set up with online learning - google classroom so that learning can continue off-site.

  • School devices will go home with students who need them for online learning.

  • Hard packs of learning are available if needed for individual students.

  • Devices will be delivered or available for pick up from school.

  • Please let us know at admin@nis.school.nz if you need extra support at home to ensure online learning is successful.

My child is unwell, can I still send them to school?

  • If your child is unwell please do not send them to school. If your child has a cough, headache, sore throat etc. these could be Covid symptoms and we encourage you to get your child tested.

Potential symptoms of Covid-19 are:

  • body aches

  • loss of smell

  • fatigue

  • breathlessness

  • headache

  • sore throat

  • sneezing

  • fever

  • diarrhoea

  • chills

  • dry cough

While these symptoms are similar to the flu or a common cold, it is best to get tested to make sure.

My child is anxious and scared. What advice to you have?

Our onsite team are working hard to make school fun, safe and a place of learning. We encourage you to focus on things they can do to help - mask-wearing, washing hands, keeping the appropriate distance, not sharing learning tools etc.
