The National Institute for Health Research Surgical Reconstruction and Microbiology Research Centre (NIHR SRMRC) is a national centre for trauma research, taking discoveries from the military frontline to improve outcomes for all patients. Since 2011 the SRMRC has been a centre where civilian and military scientists work alongside clinicians in a variety of specialist areas to improve the care and treatment of trauma patients.
The aims of the centre are:
To share best clinical practice from the military frontline to the NHS and back again
To provide a unique environment where professionals from both the clinical and the scientific world work together
Turn ground-breaking research into new treatments for patients
Multiple studies, including over 30 clinical trials are run by scientists and academics from the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Health, University of Birmingham and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Combined with a team of dedicated research nurses and administrative staff, we tackle some of the biggest questions in trauma.
We have a dedicated Patient and Public Involvement group where patients with lived experience of trauma, their family members and the public draw on their experiences to shape the research carried out within the centre and make sure that we continue to keep patients and the public at the heart of what we do.
