CRN Open Data Platform

Introduction

Over the last ten years, over 6 million people have taken part in more than 15,000 clinical research studies supported by the Clinical Research Network. This data needs to be managed, maintained and interpreted by a wide range of stakeholders to drive improvement across the NHS, academia and the life-sciences industry.

The ODP applications (apps) created by the Business Intelligence team deliver insight into CRN portfolio studies, recruitment of participants and trends in performance, as well as offering the operational management tools needed for delivery and continuous improvement. The different apps allow users to interact with high level or granular information to suit their information, analytical and reporting needs.

What is ODP?

The Open Data Platform is the name the CRN has given to a series of applications, dashboards and visualisations of data built using QlikView software. QlikView is a BI platform which allows organisations like us to:

  • Consolidate relevant data from multiple sources into a single place

  • Explore the associations in our data

  • Enable social decision making through secure, near real-time collaboration

  • Visualise data with engaging, state-of-the-art graphics

  • Search across all data—directly and indirectly

  • Interact with dynamic dashboards and analytics

Benefits of ODP

The apps in ODP are bringing real benefits by:

  • Providing a single source of truth for data and so reducing internal ‘data debates’

  • Improving the quality of data through consistency of approach, embedded standards and exposure to errors

  • Delivering superior visualisation, enabling users to interact with the data and explore trends at a glance

  • Combining and increasing the scope of data – revealing patterns, risks and best practice

  • Providing access to near real-time data

Who can access ODP?

  • Any NIHR staff with an nihr.ac.uk email address

  • NHS and academic staff, with an NHS or ac.uk email address

  • Staff from clinical research networks in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales
