What will I study?
This course aims to help you to improve your existing reading, writing, listening and speaking skills in Gàidhlig. You will also learn to understand how language works and how to get across information and ideas.
You will study a wide range of different types of texts in different media. You will also learn to think critically and creatively and develop cultural awareness.
The course has three compulsory units plus an added value unit that assesses your practical skills.
Gàidhlig: Analysis and Evaluation (6 SCQF credit points)
In this unit you will:
develop reading and listening skills in the contexts of literature, language, media and culture
develop the skills needed to understand, analyse and evaluate straightforward texts.
Gàidhlig: Creation and Production (6 SCQF credit points)
In this unit you will:
develop talking and writing skills in familiar contexts
develop the skills needed to create and produce straightforward texts in both spoken and written forms.
Gàidhlig: Literacy (6 SCQF credit points)
In this unit you will:
develop your reading, writing, listening and talking skills in a variety of forms relevant for learning, life and work
develop the ability to understand straightforward ideas and information presented verbally and in writing
develop the ability to communicate ideas and information verbally and in writing with technical accuracy.
Added Value Unit: Gàidhlig Assignment (6 SCQF credit points)
In this unit you will:
investigate a chosen topic by selecting information from texts and evaluating texts in Gàidhlig
present your findings verbally in Gàidhlig, and answer questions appropriately in Gàidhlig.
How will I be assessed?
Your teacher or tutor will assess your work on a regular basis throughout the course. Items of work might include:
practical work – reading, speaking or listening to texts
written work – producing simple texts
class-based exams.
You must pass all of the units to gain the course qualification.
What will I study?
The course provides you with the opportunity to develop your reading, critical reading, listening, talking and writing skills in order to understand and use Gaelic language. In particular, you will learn to develop your:
ability to listen, read, talk and write in Gaelic, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context
ability to understand, analyse and evaluate texts, as appropriate to purpose and audience in the contexts of literature, language, media and culture
ability to create and produce texts, as appropriate to purpose, audience and context
ability to apply knowledge of Gaelic
knowledge and understanding of Gaelic cultural heritage and the cultural heritage of others.
How will I be assessed?
Course Assessment
The course assessment has five components totalling 120 marks:
Component 1: question paper 1: Leughadh (Reading) – worth 30 marks
Component 2: question paper 1: Litreachas (Literature) – worth 20 marks
Component 3: question paper 2: Èisteachd (Listening) – worth 20 marks
Component 4: Obair shònraichte–sgrìobhadh (Assignment–writing) – worth 20 marks
Component 5: Còmhradh (Performance – talking) – worth 30 marks.
For the performance component, you will be asked to take part in a discussion on a topic chosen by yourself using detailed Gaelic language. Your performance will be set by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) and marked internally by an SQA assessor.
The question papers will be set and marked externally by the SQA.
The grade awarded is based on the total marks achieved across all course assessment components.
The course assessment is graded A-D.

This course aims to help you to develop advanced critical reading, translating, talking and writing skills in order to understand and use Gaelic language. You will focus on the skills required to understand, analyse, evaluate, translate, create and produce language.
In particular, this course covers:
advanced critical reading, translating, talking and writing skills, as appropriate to purpose and audience in a wide range of contexts
understanding, analysing and evaluating a wide range of complex and sophisticated literary texts, as appropriate to purpose and audience
creating and producing a wide range of complex and sophisticated texts, as appropriate to a range of purposes and audiences
advanced translating skills from written English to written Gaelic
knowledge of Gaelic language, literature and culture.
How will I be assessed?
Course Assessment
The course assessment consists of four components totalling 115 marks:
Component 1 — Question paper (Sgrùdadh - Practical Criticism) (30 marks)
Component 2 — Question paper (Litreachas agus Sgrìobhadh - Literature and Writing)
(40 marks)
Component 3 — Question paper (Eadar-theangachadh - Translating) (15 marks)
Component 4 — Performance (Còmhradh - Talking) (30 marks).
Component 1 - you will answer questions based on 2 written Gaelic texts, one fiction and one non-fiction.
Component 2 - you will write an essay in Gaelic form from a list of 8 essay titles.
Component 3 - you will translate one non-fiction written English text into written Gaelic.
Component 4 - you will talk for 20 minutes about a chosen topic for the Specialist Study of Language and/or Culture study area.
The question papers are set and externally marked by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).
The performance component will be assessed by a visiting SQA Assessor, with a recording of the performance marked externally by SQA.
The grade awarded is based on the total marks achieved across course assessment.
The course assessment is graded A-D.
