As of Fall 2025, the College will no longer require face-to-face College Experience instructors to adopt the traditional, costly textbook published by Kendall-Hunt. While this will continue to be the adopted text for instructors wanting to use a traditional textbook, all instructors will be able to adopt an Open Educational Resource (OER) for any section or modality. This is great news for NICC students who will save more than $70 each in College Experience sections that make the switch!
If you teach College Experience and are interested in adopting an OER, we recommend College Success by OpenStax. Click the button below to view the OpenStax text, and email us for help with the adoption. We have full courses and instructor resources such as chapter slides, quiz banks, and more available for whatever level of support you need.
Interested in adopting OER for other courses? We can help with that too! Send us an email!

We are excited to share that the DIID team was recently awarded a 2025 D2L Excellence Award! The award is given to schools who leverage Brightspace for innovation, student success, and betterment of learning communities. The DIID team won the award for the Accessibility Hub, a Brightspace course we created for the Accessibility Services team to help manage accommodation tracking, documentation, and communication.
The DIID team will receive recognition this summer at the annual D2L Fusion conference in Savannah, Georgia, and will present multiple conference sessions.
Fall course shells have been loaded into Brightspace! Now is a great time to think about making those big updates you never seem to have time for. Your instructional designer can help you do the heavy lifting by generating quiz banks, building lecture notes or slides, brainstorming activities, and more.

In the April update, D2L is introducing a new feature for the Assignment and Discussion tools that will enable instructors to provide bulk feedback to one or more students. This update will add two new buttons to the Assignment and Discussion submission pages:
Add Feedback: Applies feedback to the selected individual students or groups
Add Feedback to All: Applies feedback to all students
Along with providing text feedback, instructors can also include links and videos using the Insert Stuff button and image files using the Insert Image button. Other file uploads are not supported at this time.
Please note that the behavior varies based on the presence of existing evaluations:
If no draft or published evaluation exists: Feedback creates a saved draft for the student(s) for instructors to publish with their evaluation.
If a draft or published evaluation exists: Feedback updates the existing evaluation.
In the April update, D2L is introducing a redesigned user interface for the Media Library. This new look and feel will help manage media files more efficiently while maintaining functionality. You will notice the following changes with this update:
The Upload and Record buttons will be consolidated into the new "Add Assets" button
The "Recycle Bin" button will be moved to the top-right corner
Sorting will be a new dropdown next to Filter as the results are moved to a list instead of a table
Google Gemini recently introduced Canvas, which is an interactive space within Gemini that can help you create, refine, and share your work. Simply open a Gemini chat, click "Canvas" in your prompt bar, and then chat with Gemini. You can edit documents or code, and changes will appear in real-time!
A recent Honorlock update now requires End Dates to be added to Honorlock-enabled quizzes. If an End Date has not been added to an Honorlock-enabled quiz, Honorlock will automatically set a student's quiz access for one month. This one month of access will be from the moment the student accesses an Honorlock-enabled quiz, and it will apply to all other Honorlock-enabled quizzes in your course without End Dates.
If this happens in your course, you will need to do the following:
Access the Honorlock integration and disable Honorlock for the quiz
Edit your quiz to add an End Date and save
Access the Honorlock integration and re-enable Honorlock for the quiz
From there, Honorlock's integration will pull the quiz's End Date and apply it. If you would like the quiz to be available all semester, it is recommended to set the quiz End Date beyond your course's End Date.
