Bureau of Justice Statistics | United States Department of Justice
Provides data on corrections, crime, courts, law enforcement, tribal crime and justice, victims, reentry, federal justice system
Data sets can be huge. Some data is not presented in a format that allows for easy analysis. Some data tables are provided.
Bureau of Transportation Statistics | United States Department of Transportation
Provides data on airlines and airports, gas and fuel, freight transportation, transit usage, passenger transportation, safety, environmental impacts
Some data is presented with charts and graphs, data tables, and explanations of data.
Internal Revenue Tax Statistics
Data is provided on business tax, individual tax, charitable & exempt organizations, and taxpayer compliance.
Data provided covers several years and is mostly in data tables (Excel)
Provides primary sources that include items such as census data from 1750 on, military records, ship manifests, crop rotations from Mount Vernon. Information appears mostly in scans of historical documents and would be need to be moved into spreadsheets for analysis.
National Agriculture Statistics Service | United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Focuses on crops, livestock, environment, aquaculture, pesticide use, land and resource usage, agriculture products & production
Data can be filtered nation, region, state, county
Data includes anything from frozen yogurt production to olive sales to organic markets to alpaca inventory.
National Center for Education Statistics
Provides data on public school districts, individual public schools, & private schools as well as international schools.
Several longitudinal studies are included in data sets
National Center for Health Statistics | Center for Disease Control and Prevention
Covers diseases & conditions, infectious/immune diseases, family life, health care and insurance, disability & risk factors, injuries, life stages & population, & reproductive health.
Data presented in a variety of formats
National Centers for Environmental Information | NOAA
Data includes climate, weather, severe weather, historic and global environmental data.
Data can be narrowed to specific dates back to the 1950s and to counties in a specific state.
United States Bureau of Labor Statistics
Focuses on employment and labor statistics including labor demographics, employee compensation, labor and business costs, various industries within the U.S., employee injury and death, productivity, and more.
Data can be filtered by nation, region, state, county. Also by month, year.
Provides data taken from the censuses from 2020 to 1940 on topics including: business & economy, education, emergency management, family & living arrangements, health, housing, income & poverty, population, and public sector.
Data can be filtered by various criteria and can easily be compared to historical data.
United States Energy Information Administration Independent Statistics & Analysis
Provides data on use and production of petroleum, alternative energy, coal, natural gas, electricity, nuclear & uranium. Data also covers consumer and industrial consumption of energy sources
Data is presented in various formats, by week, month, year.

Private analytics, advisory, and management consulting company. It is known for their surveys and polls.
Data is pulled from their surveys and polls, and tends to focus on workplace and life evaluation/satisfaction issues
The Marist Poll is a national opinion poll and is considered reliable. It is based out of Marist College.
Polls focus on American opinions on politics, government, and social issues.
Survey data is provided at the bottom of each poll, often in PDF format.
The Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that provides information on the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. The center conducts public opinion polling, demographic studies, media content analysis and other empirical social science research. It does not take positions on policy issues.
Topics covered are broad and involve many aspects of contemporary life and thought, both in the United States and globally.
The Quinnipiac University Poll is a public opinion polling center based at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. It surveys public opinion in Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Minnesota, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, Virginia, and nationally.
Polls cover national and international politics.
Statista is a German company specializing in market and consumer data. While Statista is a for-profit company, some data is provided free.
The company's focus is on market/consumer research so data is generally geared toward consumer consumption trends and market analysis.
Provides access to data collected by various United Nations organizations
Covers topics as diverse as childhood malnutrition to tourism to instruments of war.
Coverage is International and allows for easy comparison.
World Health Organization | UN
Focuses on global health topics
Provides global health reports on countries on a set list of indicators that allows for easy comparison
