New Haven Equity Council

The District Equity Council began as a group of students, teachers, administrators and community members, many of whom began working together in May 2009, to identify and recommend ways that the District can be a more equitable place for all. In 2013, the New Haven Board of Education passed a board policy for Equity. The link to that policy is here (policy 0415).

According to the district's Administrative Regulation , each of our school sites also hosts a Site Equity Council. Please contact your Principal for more information. The District Equity Council is comprised of site selected representatives from each of the schools' site Equity Councils and meets once a month, during the school year, to discuss how schools are adequately addressing social justice issues and to find ways to improve.

It's priorities are to:

  • Improve the level to which curriculum, instruction, and grading address students’ cultural and individual needs, including materials, learning modalities, learning targets and assessments;

  • Ensure that students have safe and adequate opportunities to address issues of race, culture, gender orientation and religion by providing for student voice and perspective and a process for democratic action.

  • Support district staff and families with understanding the definition of Equity and Social Justice, by providing professional development and workshops.

All priorities seek to identify and remedy habitual patterns of unintentional racism, bias, and at time, intentional racism and bias.
