Online Learning Highlights

Hoggard Senior, Elizabeth MacDonald, represented both her high school and North Carolina Virtual Public Schools as she was selected to be a virtual speaker on her experiences as an online learner through NCVPS at the December State Board of Education Meeting. Elizabeth spoke in regards to her experiences as both an NCVPS student and as a peer tutor for the program which she has been since her freshman year. After speaking on the benefits and opportunities NCVPS provides, Elizabeth fielded questions from Board Members. She answered questions ranging from the effects NCVPS has had on her, why she takes NCVPS courses, and what if any are issues she has encountered with the online learning platform. Elizabeth started taking NCVPS classes as a middle school student and continued to take advantage of the online learning option throughout high school. NCVPS has allowed her to take three levels of Mandarin Chinese for her World Language, an option not available without NCVPS since the course is not offered at the school. Elizabeth is also an International Baccalaureate student and has stated that being able to fulfill her world language using NCVPS courses and serve as a peer tutor for the program has allowed her to fulfill requirements for the IB program, has helped foster confidence, develop public speaking skills, and also allowed her to establish a more personal relationship with her Chinese Grandmother. While speaking with the members of the State Board of Education and those in attendance of the meeting, Elizabeth listed the knowledge she has gained from her Mandarin courses with NCVPS as being instrumental in making her feel comfortable and adamant about pursuing her education further at a University in China where she will study statistics and political science and hopefully work in public policy one day at the state or federal level.
