WELCOME to my website.
I am an English Language Arts teacher with 25 years of experience in New Hanover County. After completing an internship at New Hanover High School in the spring of 2000, I accepted a full-time teaching position continuing to serve NHHS in myriad capacities over the next 18 years. From instructing in Lyceum Academy and working on cross-curricular teams to helping build the first AVID program and design an honors curriculum for the county, I have been fortunate to collaborate, lead, and grow as an educator over the years.
I joined the faculty and staff at the learning cottage in the fall of 2018, where I assumed additional leadership roles in collaboration with my teaching team, my department, and UNCW's Watson College of Education. You will find that my teaching style and my classroom are student-centered. As I follow the NC Standards to guide what skills students must hone, I alter and incorporate text that is relevant to the students that I teach. Literacy continues to be the key to personal growth, so all students must learn to dissect various forms of text and non-text accurately in order to excel in any career ahead. I aim to provide an equitable and inclusive education with personal choice and investment so all students can succeed.
As for my education and qualifications, I hold a B.A. in English Literature and Language (1996) and an M.Ed in English Education (2008) from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. I hold two NC teacher certifications: English Language Arts 9-12 & English Language Learners/English as Second Language K-12. I have been a National Boards Certified Teacher since 2006 and I am a certified Advanced Placement teacher.
