Yes, students will be receiving some workbooks as well as other resources to help support virtual learning. Most of the work will be completed digitally on the computer, but we will be sending home math, reading, handwriting and moral focus workbooks. These should be available for pickup during the first week of school.
Occasionally it may be helpful to print off some material that teachers send to help assist with an assignment or to keep a student organized. However, if a printer is unavailable students can follow along on blank piece of paper!
There is flexibility within a day for the independent activities and students can work on these in whatever order they choose, however students will not be able to work ahead for the week. Assignments will be posted on Google Classroom daily and students will need to complete them that day. Just like if we were in person together they will need to complete the work daily as we learn together.
Office hours for students will be a time they can stop in and ask for help with something or a time that the teacher may ask a student to drop in for some extra help on a previous lesson. Office hours for parents are a time that parents can stop in and ask for help with technology or ask questions.
The intervention and special education teams will be working closely with the virtual teacher to ensure that your student's needs are met including necessary accommodations. If your student would normally receive support from special services they will still be receiving this support. We are still working together to figure out the best way to implement this, but intervention and special education teachers will most likely be either joining our small group sessions to help with those skills or they will host a separate session with their students to work on their goals.
Students will be doing assignments daily on google classroom and teachers will check over their work and keep track/give feedback on skills that need additional practice. During live sessions teachers will watch what students are work on and be able to informally evaluate them as they would in the classroom. There will also be small weekly assessments to check for understanding of the skills from the week.
The NWEA test will happen during the beginning of the year as normal, only from home. Students will also be taking interim assessments through Edcite. M-STEP testing information will come out later.
Students will still be taking weekly assessments, interim assessments, as well as the NWEA MAP test from home. We will use Edcite as our main testing platform for at home assessments. More information to come on how to access Edcite.
Unfortunately students will not have any designated specials times, but the specials team will be putting together some resources and activities for the virtual kids to work on at home. These will be posted on the South Arbor website- more info to come on this from Mrs. Bondy. I am also happy to suggest activities to cover specials as well!
There are a couple ways students can ask questions while working on an assignment. If they are comfortable, the fastest way to ask for help may be to leave a public comment on the assignment in google classroom. Often times other students will see the question before the teacher and can respond and help out. The best way to get help on an assignment is for students to drop in during daily office hours and just ask the teacher for assistance. If they would like to send a message instead they can send Mrs. Garin an email from their gmail app on clever or they can send a message from the messages tab at the top of their clever page.
Small group live sessions will be recorded just in case a student is absent and needs to review the lesson. They will not be posted, however parents can request the video be shared with them for review.
HAVE PATIENCE! 😃 We are all figuring things out as we go and making adjustments as needed. Feel free to reach out if things seem overwhelming from a parent's perspective or if something isn't working at home. We know this a tough time and we can help you figure out how to make things work! Also please allow 24 hours for teachers to respond to your email. Usually you will hear back before then, but we are in meetings with students most of the day and are unable to check email. If you have an urgent question use class dojo.
