Message from our Tumuaki

Manuia le vaiaso o le gagana Samoa - Happy Samoan Language Week!

We are celebrating New Zealand's third most spoken language this week. Many of our Pasifika students at Napier Girls' High School have Samoan connections.

The 2024 theme for Samoa Language Week is 'Tautua i le alofa, manuia le lumana'i' - 'Serve in love for a blessed future'. The concept of tautua focuses on the phrase – “Serve in love”. Love is the driving force of service. No matter what service looks like or who is doing it, service is accomplished through the power of love.

This year’s theme aims to express the significance of service that is founded on love. Tautua can only be achieved through consistent development. Similarly, the maintenance of language is also achieved through service - through our values of love, respect, and especially in the vā fealoa’i (respectful relationships) that protect Samoan people. Service begins in the family and continues in schools, villages, churches, in our communities and countries. Service is a practice that is not exclusive to certain people or ages, but rather, a process that begins at childhood and continues into adulthood.

If you're new to this beautiful language, here are five phrases to get you started:

🌺 Talofa lava - Hello

🌺 O a mai oe - How are you?

🌺 Fa'amolemole - Please

🌺 Fa'afetai - Thank you

🌺 Tofa soifua - Goodbye

Celebrating New Zealand Youth Week

New Zealand Youth Week, held annually in May, is a vibrant and inspiring event dedicated to recognising and celebrating the potential, passion, and contributions of young people across the country. This year's theme is 'Māwherangi a tama roto ka taka, kāpuia ake ka pūrangiaho' - 'We may not have it all together, but together we have it all'. This kōrero translates in both a literal and creative context. The first half of the sentence is more literal, referring to feeling internally confused whether that was mindfully or spiritually. The second half of the sentence is more of a creative context speaking on togetherness. "Kāpuia ake ka pūrangiaho" which ultimately means by binding together, we can help one another see clearly what matters the most - having it all together.

Youth Week is a nationwide festival designed to celebrate young people and encourage their active participation in their communities. Organised by Ara Taiohi, the national peak body for youth development, the event includes a diverse array of activities, workshops, and events hosted by schools, community groups, and organisations throughout New Zealand. The aim is to create spaces where young people can express themselves, explore their interests, and connect with peers and mentors. Our Youth Council students spoke in Assembly about events planned.

Youth Week is more than just a series of events; it is a movement that emphasises the value of young people in shaping a better future. By providing platforms for young people to express themselves and develop their skills, Youth Week helps to build confidence, foster leadership, and create a sense of belonging. Moreover, Youth Week promotes intergenerational dialogue and understanding. It encourages adults to listen to young people, recognise their potential, and support their aspirations. This collaborative approach helps bridge gaps and build stronger, more inclusive communities.

New Zealand Youth Week is a celebration of the energy, creativity, and leadership of our young people. It is a reminder that by investing in our youth, we are investing in the future. Let's come together to celebrate and support our rangatahi, acknowledging their contributions and empowering them to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Student Absences

As we head into the winter months and there is a resurgence of COVID-19 here are a few reminders about reporting absences and the implications for students completing NCEA assessments:

When a student is absent, the parent/caregiver is requested to contact the Student Liaison Officer with the reason for absence on that day:

phone (06) 835 4199, text 021 477 550 or email absentee@nghs.school.nz

An easy way to do this is via the Schoolbridge App, pushing Report Absence and then selecting from the options.

If the absence is due to medical reasons and/or COVID-19 please state that clearly.

For students who are missing NCEA assessments or are requesting an extension we do usually ask for a medical certificate to support the application. We appreciate that this is sometimes not possible in which case students need to communicate in the first instance with our Principal’s Nominee Rachel Roberts

For students who are absent due to COVID-19 we would expect this positive result to be logged on your My Health Record and for the absence notification to us to clearly state COVID.

Student health and wellbeing is a priority and if your daughter is symptomatic and unwell please keep her at home.

Planned Absence from School (Leave Request) and NZQA Assessments

If parents know in advance that their daughter is to be absent from school, for example for sporting or cultural participation not organised by the school, or a family event or holiday, an email should be sent to the Student Liaison Officer (absentee@nghs.school.nz) or a Planned Leave Request filled out via the Schoolbridge App. This needs to be applied for at least one week in advance of the absence. This enables the Principal to ensure that the absence will not unduly affect the student’s education.

Each case is dealt with on its individual merits. The request will be deemed as either “approved leave” or "explained" as per Ministry of Education regulations. It is the student's responsibility to liaise with their teachers regarding any missed school work. Please note that a holiday taken during term time is  an “explained" absence.

If the student will be missing an assessment due to "explained" leave it is likely to result in a 'not achieved' grade. Please note that "explained" leave is not an acceptable reason to have an extension or a new assessment date for any NZQA assessments.

NGHS teams participated in an exciting day of competition in Netball, Hockey, Football, Rugby, Badminton and Basketball.  We were successful in 6 out of the 10 encounters to retain the title and return home with the trophy in hand! Thank you to our staff, coaches and parents and to Tauranga Girls' who hosted the exchange this year.

Congratulations to the below players who received the Most Valuable Player and Fair Play awards for their representative teams:

Hawke’s Bay Secondary School Swimming Champs 2024

This annual event was held at the Hawke's Bay Regional Aquatic Centre. Once again Napier Girls’ High School showed its strength in the pool. Winning the Hawke's Bay Swimming Champs with 374.5 points. In second place was Havelock North High School with 236 points.

This is very much a team event with all 19 swimmers gaining points for our school team. The team consists of:

Seniors: Zoe Ennor, Holly Stanford, Paige Foster, Keira Joyce, Ellie Meynell and Nancy Johnson (who have all continued to have outstanding swims for the school); and Intermediates: Ophelia Booth, Lucy Kinnear, Molly Duly, Ava Munro, Olivia Meynell and Breeze Van Veldhuizen. And a big welcome to Olivia Johnson, Ellen Wagstaff, Ali Edwards, Renee Redmond, Addy Wairama, Mia Scott and Mila Rasmussen. We saw these Year 9 students at the school swimming sports as they made a big splash. They demonstrated the continuing strength in the pool we will have for years to come. It's always exciting watching the new talent coming into school.

A big welcome to Ms Buchanan who has quickly become a valuable addition to our teaching staff and swim team.

Rugby

The NGHS U16 team played against St Peters Cambridge last Saturday. This was the first time both teams had played each other and it was a very even contest, with NGHS taking the win 25-17 (5 tries to 3).

Rugby History

Anna Clark (nee Kennerley) was part of the group who established rugby at NGHS back in 1999. She attended the NGHS U16 vs St Peters Cambridge game on Saturday 25 May and shared this historical photo. One highlight was a game she played against Flaxmere College on McLean Park as the curtain raiser for Hawke's Bay vs Scotland and won. After the game they wore our number 1s and many spectators stopped the players to comment on their game. Very special times!

Anna has gifted her jersey back to NGHS.

Ngā mihi nui Anna.

North Island Secondary Schools’ Horse Trials

Our NGHS Navy Team competed in the NISS Horse Trials in Taupō over the weekend and won the event for the second year in a row. Congratulations to Team Navy, consisting of Amelia Kirk (Capt), Lucy Robinson, Charlotte Harding and Chloe Cann who were competing in the 95 cm class. Charlotte was placed 1st in her class after the dressage, with Lucy in 3rd. This put the participants in good stead for the show jumping phase. Chloe and Lucy went clear in the showjumping and all four girls rode a clear cross country within the optimum time to finish on their show jumping scores. They won the Team trophy with a score of 106 points well ahead of closest rival Nga Tawa on 143 points. Team White competed in the 80cm class, captained by Addison Trumper. Addison Oliver was able to finish 16th overall.

Showquest

Our Napier Girls' High School Showquest team brought the energy to Showquest during the day at rehearsals on Friday and on the stage for the evening performance. We were awarded Best Video Wall, ZM soundtrack award, Best Styling, Best Props, Highly Commended Choreography, Highly Commended Lighting and Whetū Rangitahi 'Star of the Night' with our live singer Tiaki McArdle and 3rd place overall. Dance prefect Charlee Carian performed as a lead with passion and every dancer on the stage gave it their all in a performance that had an impact! A huge thank you to all the choreographers who created this piece and also to everyone who contributed to make it a show to remember both on and off the stage. We look forward to sharing the final video and will receive this in a few weeks.

Big Sing

The Big Sing regional secondary school’s annual choral festival is taking place in 11 centres around New Zealand, involving around 8,000 students from over 200+ schools, supported by their families and communities. The East Coast Regional showcase was held at Toitoi Hawke's Bay Arts and Events Centre in Hastings on Wednesday 29 May and 17 student choirs were featured from our region.

NGHS entered two choirs, Ad Lucem and Ngā Ihi o te Rā. Both choirs performed very well under the skillful conducting hands of Mr Christopher Atkinson, accompanied by our accomplished pianist Sarah Lee and our student guitarist Lily Harrington.

Both choirs gave their all on stage and filled Toitoi with their lovely harmonies. Ngā Ihi o te Rā (the new name gifted to our all-comers school choir) performed Tū mai Pania, written by our own Whaea Grace Heays as part of their programme. This was followed by Simple Gifts and the song Flashlight from Pitch Perfect 2.

Ad Lucem challenged themselves this year by singing in three languages, English, Te Reo Māori and Finnish. For our song Kaipaava we were assisted in our pronunciation of this tricky language by our two Finnish teachers, Maarit Peltomaki and Mikael Nyberg. They also performed the Cole Porter classic Too Darn Hot from the musical Kiss Me Kate.

Ad Lucem were thrilled to receive the award for best performance of a piece of Choral Art Music for their song Karakia for the Dawn by New Zealand composer David Hamilton. A just reward for their hours of hard work this year. We now have to wait a few weeks to find out if we will qualify for Cadenza or Finale. Fingers crossed!

Duke Of Edinburgh Silver Practice Tramp

17-19 May 2024 - Makino/Middle Hill Circuit, Kaweka Ranges

We had 20 students and three staff members head off for this challenging Silver practice tramp last weekend. For those who have tramped in the Kawekas you know how challenging they can be, this with the added chilly May weather really tested the group. The students and staff are well prepared, having completed Bronze Duke of Ed and the Silver Training Camp in February. With the expert guidance of Makahika OPC they had a very successful tramp. Mr Don Poulgrain, Mrs Sarah Raggett and Ms Ali Hollington also supported these students over the three days. A special thank you for your time, support and kindness on this tramp.

Having completed their Silver training and practice, the students only have a final qualifying tramp to complete in September to have completed their adventurous journey section of their award. Skill, service and physical recreation sections all need to be worked on over a 6-month period. As soon as these are signed off they are invited to participate in the Gold Award.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank so many of our school community who have supported over 250 NGHS students this year working on either Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. These students rely on adults to assess, mentor, coach and teach them along the way. This takes time and energy and it is much appreciated.
