Empowering ākonga to achieve success and fulfilment, for themselves, whānau and community
Tēnā koutou katoa.
It has been a shorter term than usual - but that has not stopped us cramming ten weeks worth of activities into nine weeks! We have rounded out the term with a sports exchange, an inaugural Arts exchange with NBHS, and the Whakataetae house competition. Whakataetae is led by our House Prefects (with amazing support from their senior students in each house) and this year there is a small group performing our new school haka Te Hā (written and gifted to us by Whaea Grace and Hēmi Birch). We aim to have all students and staff able to perform this haka by the end of the year, and we appreciate the patience and guidance from both Whaea Grace and our senior students who are charged with helping us on this journey. Each House also performs a wāiata - this is certainly a keenly contested house event and a fun way to end our term.
Tūāhuriri (our combined Kapahaka with NBHS) performed to both schools on Thursday - and it is fair to say that their performance has not lost any of it’s intensity over the last few weeks! They had both audiences spell-bound and I am sure they inspired a number of students to aspire to being part of kapahaka. At NBHS, they performed as part of an inaugural Arts Exchange which showcased dance, and musical performances, ending with items from each team of prefects. This is a great initiative which we hope will become an annual exchange with our brother school.
It has been an absolute privilege to lead the school this term and I thank all the staff and students who have supported me in this role. I know Dawn is looking forward to catching up on all the activities that have taken place while she has been away (although she has kept in touch via the social media posts!), and she is looking forward to reconnecting with the school community.
Wishing you all a lovely time of rest and reflection over the holidays, and hopefully some valuable time spent with whānau and friends.
Ngā mihi nui

Music Evening
On Wednesday 18 June, the NGHS hall resonated with beautiful music performed by students from all year levels during our annual Music Evening. The night featured a vibrant array of talented soloists, duos, and ensembles, each showcasing their musical accomplishments and captivating the audience with their artistry. With so many students having participated in various music competitions and events throughout the term, the evening offered a rich and diverse programme. The standard of performance was exceptional, and every participant shone in the spotlight they so rightly deserved. A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in making the evening such a success. It was a truly memorable celebration of music.
NGHS and NBHS Arts Exchange
On Thursday 26 June, Napier Girls’ High School and Napier Boys’ High School came together for a collaborative Arts Exchange — a first-of-its-kind event for both schools. The day started with a performance from our combined Kapa Haka Ropu to all staff and students at Napier Girls'. We then travelled to Napier Boys' for the exchange. Students competed in chess and debating and there was a combined art exhibition featuring various pieces of artwork from both schools. Over lunchtime we were treated to some fantastic and varied musical performances from groups, duos and solos. In the afternoon the Year 10-13 students from NBHS were treated to some major performances from our premier dance group 'Proud Mary', Kapa Haka and the cast of the upcoming joint production of Footloose. The exchange ended with performances from the prefect teams from each school. This exciting event was student led, with our Performing Arts Prefects Mia Nichol, Grace Kirker and Edie Croad, and Bridie Derbidge, Manutaki/Manukura, playing a key role. Many thanks to NBHS for hosting us and all the staff involved. We look forward to this exchange becoming an annual event on both school's calendars.
Footloose
The combined NBHS and NGHS production of Footloose is shaping up to be an unforgettable performance. Attending a recent rehearsal was an absolute thrill — the students’ energy and talent are truly bringing this production to life. With opening night just weeks away, now is the perfect time to secure your tickets. This is a show you definitely won’t want to miss!
Ad Lucem
Ad Lucem were delighted to be invited to perform at the Volunteering Hawke's Bay Expo and Excellence Awards. This event was to recognise and celebrate the great work that volunteers in our community do. It was an honour to support this organisation and the invaluable work they do, and the choir sang beautifully.
Following on from our success at the East Coast Regional Big Sing, Ad Lucem has been chosen as one of twelve top school choirs from the Lower North Island to compete in the Lower North Island Cadenza. The choir has become a regular at recent cadenzas, and we look forward to being part of this great competition again. We are especially pleased to be chosen alongside our fraternal school, Napier Boys’ High School, whose choir Voxology will be competing for the first time. I’m sure we’ll be cheering very loudly for each other!
DanceNZMade
Napier Girls' High School is excited to be entering nine DanceNZMade teams in this year’s regional competition, as well as having many students competing in the solo and duo categories. After an outstanding Showquest entry earlier in term 1, we’re lucky to have 78 talented and enthusiastic dancers taking part and some are involved in multiple teams which shows just how much they enjoy this event. Teams will compete across the junior, senior, and open divisions. We’re also thrilled to welcome new dancers into our teams this year, growing our dance whānau and giving more students the chance to be part of this high-energy, creative competition.
While NGHS has a proud history of success at DanceNZMade, the standard lifts every year, and the expectations continue to grow. Our focus remains on creating performances we are proud of that:
Reflect a range of dance styles
Showcase our dancers’ skills
Challenge them through choreography and creative ideas
Embody manaakitanga and strong teamwork
We can’t wait to see our dancers bring their energy, creativity, and commitment to the stage.
More information to follow in term 3.

Our Year 11 Primary Industries students recently had the exciting opportunity to attend the New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays at Mystery Creek — the largest agricultural event in the Southern Hemisphere.
It was a big day, with students departing school at 6.00am and returning at 8.00pm, but the experience was well worth the early start. Fieldays provided a unique and engaging chance to explore the breadth and diversity of New Zealand’s primary industries.
Students enjoyed exploring a range of specialised Hubs focused on Careers, Education, Forestry, Innovation, and Wellness. The day was packed with hands-on activities, informative Tent Talks, and the chance to connect with industry experts and future pathways. There was also time to enjoy the delicious food and retail therapy that Fieldays is famous for.
A few lucky students even bumped into some famous faces — Dame Valerie Adams, Richie McCaw, and Chris Luxon!
This trip gave our students a valuable insight into the many opportunities available in the primary industries sector. It was a fantastic day out and one that has certainly inspired future thinking.

The 2025 New Zealand Schools' Japanese Trivia Championships were held on Friday 13 June at Karamu High School. This is an annual event run across New Zealand with more than 50 schools from 9 regions competing this year with a winner from EACH venue as well as a National winner. The trivia night aims to provide students with an opportunity to showcase their cultural knowledge while fostering connections with fellow Japanese language enthusiasts.
Napier Girls' High School entered four teams. All groups performed admirably with "The gAng", (Te Aorere Kururangi-Pardoe, Alythea Gray, Nerisa Chairit, and Anika Kingi), excelling, securing 3rd place tiebreaker with other teams.
Mr Strahan Winchester
On Tuesday 17 June Profe Maarit and Mr Nyberg took ten senior Spanish students to the Spanish Senior Trivia Evening. This event was held in the Havelock North High School library with participants from Napier Girls' High School, Havelock North High School, Karamū High School and Woodford House.
Students tested their knowledge in all things related to the Spanish speaking world: food, art, geography, music, etc. This time all the winning teams came from Havelock North High School, but two of our three teams Las Gatas Chulas and Loco para español came in a shared 4th place. ¡Buen trabajo! During the quiz we enjoyed some snacks and pizza. It was also great to get to know other Hawke's Bay students who are learning Spanish.
¡Lo pasamos muy bien! ¡Y gracias a Señor Nyberg por las fotos!

The boards of all state and state-integrated schools are required to hold elections every three years, and this will be happening again in 2025.
The School Board is an important part of our school, as they set the strategic direction for our school, consult with our school community about our school, ensure the school’s funding is spent wisely and ensure that we are giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi within our school. Our board is made up of five parent representatives, the Principal, a staff representative elected by the staff, and a student representative elected by the students.
The current board has made the decision to appoint Schooled - Election Pilot as the Returning Officer for our election and for the election to be provided online. They have been assisting schools with elections for over 20 years and have been the only election provider accredited by the Ministry of Education to provide online election services since online elections started in 2022. Nomination forms and voting forms will be sent to all eligible voters by email directly from Election Pilot. If we don’t have an email address for you, nomination and voting papers will be sent by post so no-one will miss out.
School Board Elections must be held in accordance with the provisions in the Education and Training Act 2020 and the Education (Board Elections) Regulations 2022.
Your name and contact details have been provided to Election Pilot to enable the provision of election services for our school, as required by legislation. They will use your contact details for the provision of election services for Napier Girls’ High School only, and your details will be deleted 60 days after the election date as required by legislation.
If you have any questions about the election process, please contact the Returning Officer directly on 0800 868 369 or election@electionpilot.nz
We will continue to keep you updated through the various stages of the election process, and our election date is Wednesday 10 September 2025.
