Kia ora e te whānau
What a fun and vibrant week it’s been as we celebrated International Boarding Week! Our girls have been incredibly busy participating in a wide variety of events and activities designed to bring our boarding community together and showcase the spirit of boarding life. A highlight for me was the emails sent home to parents thanking them for providing the opportunity to board at NGHS. I hope these also brought a smile to the faces of parents who received them.
We always value your input and support - whether you're a parent, guardian, or friend of our boarding community. If you have any concerns, feedback, or would just like to drop by for a visit, please don’t hesitate to call, email, or pop in. We’d love to hear from you.
Ngā mihi nui,
Joyce Clark

The week started with Parent Appreciation Day.
The boarders were encouraged to send their caregiver an email to say thank you for the opportunities being a boarder has given them.
The winners of the gift baskets were:
Year 9 - Eva Arnold
Year 10 - Paskalle Hansen
Year 11 - Emma McLachlan
Year 12 - Kate Drinkrow
Year 13 - Layla Brunton
Tuesday was Staff Appreciation Day.
A small token of appreciation was given to the 42 people that contribute to the running of Hewett House and the welfare that your daughter/granddaughter receives whilst living at Hewett House.
Wednesday was Wellness Wednesday and all the boarders were able to relax with a beautiful Lanocreme-active manuka honey sheet face mask. Our special thanks to Lanocreme New Zealand for their generous sponsorship.
On Thursday we ditched prep for the night and had a Karaoke Night, with lots of chocolate for prizes.
Then on Friday our rangatahi had a Pyjama Breakfast, with a yummy bacon and egg muffin.
Sorry girls but we still will not be allowing pyjamas at breakfast any other day.
Making the Most of Prep and Support Opportunities
Term 2 is a busy and important time for our ākonga, with winter sports and co-curricular activities in full swing, and assessments taking place across nearly all subjects. With routines now firmly in place and relationships well established, it’s time to knuckle down and do the mahi!
To stay on top of academic demands, students must make full use of their evening Prep time. We encourage social and sporting commitments to be scheduled outside of Prep hours wherever possible. For those who miss a Prep session, the school library is open from 8:30 am to 3:45pm daily and provides a quiet space to catch up on work.
As the term progresses, some tauira may begin to feel they need extra support with their learning. Napier Girls’ High School offers a range of academic support options:
Homework Club – Every Wednesday lunchtime in the library, run by our Academic Prefects, Sally and Hannah. Despite the name, this is also a place to access Peer Tutoring across a variety of subjects. Students can request ongoing peer tutoring if needed. In some cases, tutoring can be arranged within the hostel whānau during Prep time.
Hostel Maths Clinic – Held on Wednesdays during Prep, with Mr Mather available to assist students with their mathematics work.
Science Support – Tuesdays at 1.25pm in the library, with Head of Science Ms Rimmer and senior Science students available to help.
English/Literacy Support – Thursdays at lunchtime in W3 with a member of the English Department.
We encourage all students to take advantage of these opportunities to stay confident and connected in their learning journey.
Ngā mihi

Kia ora. What a busy couple of weeks it has been!
Last week we celebrated international boarding week within the hostel. From giving our gratitude for being a boarder, to Wellness Wednesday with face masks and a pyjama cooked breakfast on Friday, it was awesome to get involved in all these activities. We all thoroughly enjoyed the activities run during this week. A huge thank you to Mrs Clark and the hostel staff who helped in the organisation of this!
On Thursday evening we got to test out the new hostel karaoke machine. The girls had lots of fun singing, dancing and laughing along to our favourite songs. It definitely made for a fun evening and we are excited to host more karaoke nights in the future.
This week, lots of the boarders have been involved in a variety of sporting and cultural events. Over the weekend, a strong contingent of boarders represented NGHS in horse trialling. On Monday night, many girls took part in Showquest. Well done to all involved! The Tauranga Girls' exchange was held in Taupō on Tuesday. It was an awesome day, with many boarders competing in their sporting codes and coming away with great results. Many of our ākonga have also been involved in the preparation for Kapa Haka regionals which is fast approaching. Their performance is looking outstanding and we look forward to seeing their hard work pay off on the stage soon.
With all that being said, we look forward to what lies ahead as the hustle and bustle of hostel life continues. In the meantime, enjoy a restful weekend with whānau.

A Quick Reminder
If you're feeling unwell or showing any signs of illness, please stay home and take the time you need to recover. Your health — and the health of others — comes first.
Boarding Finances
Please contact hostelfinance@nghs.school.nz if you have any questions regarding your hostel account.
Change to 5 / 7 Day Status
If your daughter is wanting to change her boarding status ie to 5 day or 7 day this needs to come to the Hostel Manager in writing please.
Sunday Late Dinners
If you require a late/saved dinner on a Sunday night this MUST be booked by 12.00pm on the Sunday by putting your name on the list at the office preferably before you leave on Friday afternoon. If you have not booked a late/saved dinner you will be able to have toast and spreads. We hope you can appreciate that our kitchen team need to be able to plan for accurate numbers. It is very difficult for them when suddenly they need to find 15 – 20 extra servings. Thanks for your support with this.
Special Dietary Students
Please remember that if you have listed yourself as a special dietary requirement you are expected to honour this and not change your mind as something else appeals, the kitchen staff are going to considerable effort to cater for your needs. Once again, thank you for your support.
We love celebrating successes at Hewett House.
If you have some news (and/or photos) we would love to hear about it so we can include it in future pānui editions :)
