8th Grade Digital Autobiography Gallery

Description: As part of the 8th Grade's Interdisciplinary Service Learning Project in 2016, the students explored the 9 elements of Digital Citizenship and focused heavily on managing their Digital Footprint. They focused on Managing Your Digital Footprint and How to Protect Yourself from Data Mining. This is because students learned how data miners utilize this strategy to target market consumers, while some also use it for negative activities. This year's 8th grade IDSL/Service Learning project is focused on.

They felt it was a topic very relevant to the 4th & 5th grade group they presented their learning to, because this is a critical age students begin to engage and explore social media, use the internet for academic and social tasks. and informing them of tips & research on how to be safe is critical! Therefore by creating an interactive Digital Scavenger Hunt, the 8th graders were able to:

  1. Write their own audio-biographies to share their digital footprints, interests and future plans.
  2. Design a print collage of their digital background through using a silhouette of their headshot as a canvas.
  3. Transcribe their biographies into QR Codes to embed into their silhouette and build a Audio-biography gallery throughout the school. This served as the content for their digital scavenger hunt.
  4. After the 8th graders led the 4th and 5th graders in the scavenger hunt and the students discovered the hidden codes and transcribed the mystery message, the older students led small group discussions on lessons learned and advice on how to best be safe online and when engaging in social media activities.
