I hope you all enjoyed the long weekend and got the chance to do some exciting things with your families. With only three weeks to go it seems as if this term is absolutely flying by!
The children are now fully immersed in their summer topic, 'Our Green Earth'. They have created amazing works of art that can be found adorning the walls of the hall. Each year group thought carefully about what was important to them in terms of the environment and created a piece of work based on that. We have seasonal produce on display from Year 1, monumental waves from Reception. Nursery and the Two Year Olds have collaborated to create a beautiful tribute to 'The Green Giant' by Katie Cottle. Year 2 have depicted the importance of recycling, Year 3 have shown their passion for saving bee habitats and Year 4 have used collage to warn us of the imminent threats to some of our most endangered animals. Year 5 want us all to create a plastic free sea and Year 6 highlight some of the everyday objects that we could be recycling but often forget! Please take a look at the amazing work the next time you are in school.
On Friday 17th May all of the pupils here at Shacklewell are going to pause so we can look back and reflect on our 'Outstanding' achievement. Too often in life we move on to the next thing, but this day of celebration will allow children and adults alike, to really reflect on this marvellous community. The children will be going to the cinema, enjoying a non uniform day, extended play times and a bouncy castle! Individual year groups will communicate with you about how the day will look for them- I cannot wait!
On Sunday 19th May, children, parents and teachers will be pounding the pavement to raise money for our summer trips during the Virgin Sports Hackney Half Marathon. Some parents and staff, myself included, will be running the full 13.1 mile course before undertaking an additional mile with the 6 or so children from school. If you can spare a couple of pounds then please click the link to help motivate us all to cross the line!
Have a great week,
Rory

The children in Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 all have national assessments coming up before the end of the academic year. The children in Year 1 will take part in a 'Phonics Screening Check' in the week beginning 10th June 2019. This quick check allows the children to demonstrate their understanding of phonics awareness. There will be a parent information session regarding this after the summer half term holiday.
More immediate for the children in Year 2 and Year 6 are the SATs tests. The children in Year 2 have begun their tests already. Each child will be assessed in reading and mathematics. The tests will run for the month because the children complete them in small groups. These tests are used to help inform the teacher's judgements for the end of KS1. If you have any questions about these assessments please have a look at the slideshow below or contact your child's teacher.
The children in Year 6 have their SATS beginning next Monday. From the 13th to 16th May the children will sit tests in reading, spelling, punctuation and grammar, alongside arithmetic and reasoning. These tests are marked offsite and a standard score is returned to the school at the beginning of July. To ensure a smooth start to the day for the children in Year 6, there is a free breakfast club provision from 8.00am for all children in Year 6 from Monday 13th May until Thursday 16th. All children in Year 6 must be in school no later than 8.45am on each of those days. Please see the slideshow below if you have any further questions or please contact the year 6 team.
