What a glorious day to start our fourth week of the summer term. I don't know about you but I couldn't be happier to see the sunshine streaming across the playground. The weather looks set to stay this warm for the entire week so may I remind you that children must label their jumpers, as they tend to be left in the playground as the temperature rises!
Today saw the start of the Year 6 SATS examinations. These tests of reading, mathematics and grammar will occur all week for the children in 6S and 6W. It was fantastic to see all of Year 6 at breakfast club this morning and it really helped them get off to a settled and positive start. I am sure you will join me in wishing them and the year 6 teaching team all the very best of luck.
The rest of the school have been focused on their new writing texts today. The children will be studying their new books for two weeks and then they will create original pieces of writing in the style of the story they have been reading. Meanwhile the children in the EYFS have been really enjoying their sustainability project, learning about recycling and how to look after their local environment.
Looking ahead to the last couple of weeks of this half term we have some important events lined up, not least our whole school celebration on Friday 17th May. A letter going home tomorrow will share more details but it is safe to say it will be a memorable day for all the children at Shacklewell. On Monday 20th May the parents in Year 1 will have the opportunity to find more about the upcoming phonics screening check. This session will be straight after school in the Year 1 classrooms. There is also a SRE parent session for all year groups after school on Thursday 23rd May. All parents will be able to come to school to find out about the content covered in our sex and relationships unit in the second part of the summer term. The highlight of the half term will be Friday 24th May when we will open the doors of the school to showcase the end of the 'Our Green Earth' topic.
I am personally looking ahead to Sunday 19th May when I will be one of the many thousands of people hitting the streets for the Hackney Half marathon. The children will also be completing their final mile on Sunday so if you could spare a few pounds to motivate us all to cross the line we would greatly appreciate it- Go Fund Me Shacklewell.
Looking forward to seeing you cheering us on this Sunday!

This half term has seen the children at Shacklewell take part in a huge range of sporting events. The children have been able to take part in grass track cycling at Hackney Downs. This is one of several cycling events in the summer sporting calendar and a perfect opportunity for the children to put their 'Bikeability' skills to the test.
This half term has also seen our girl's football teams from years 3,4,5 and 6 tackle local competition in the Young Hackney Festival of Football. The teams did an amazing job of representing the school, playing with passion and skill.
Some of the children in year 4 have also had the opportunity to find out more about the role of active lifestyles in maintaining a healthy body. They found out about the right nutritional choices to fuel their sporting activities and how best to help their bodies repair and rest.
I am looking forward to sharing even more sporting success with you in the coming weeks, ahead of our annual sports day on Wednesday 26th June.
