Headteacher Update

Dear families,

The bulletin is back, after a brief hiatus in the first part of the spring term. This weekly update will come home on a Friday afternoon and will showcase events from school each week and provide information about upcoming events.

The world outside our gates seems to become increasingly unknowable and uncertain but here at Shacklewell we are working hard to provide opportunities for familiarity and stability. In order to achieve this we have reintroduced, 'Come Learn With Me', 'Come Dine with Me', and sharing assemblies. You will also notice that we have restarted our partnership with Dalston CLR James Library and the children in Reception and Year 1 will be making regular visits to it in the coming weeks. Please keep an eye on the 'Key Dates' section of the bulletin to make sure you don't miss anything this half term.

On Thursday 3rd it is World Book Day and we are asking that as many children as possible dress up as a favourite book character or that they come in their pyjamas, ready for our 'bedtime story' at the end of the day. Please do not spend too much on any new items for the costumes, instead think about reusing and upcycling previous outfits. During the day we will also be hosting a book swap and bake sale. On Wednesday 2nd there will be two parent sessions (9.00am or 3.00pm) to talk about the importance of helping your child to read and this will be hosted by Ms Lowin.

Another important event for us this half term is our Parent Consultations on Thursday 31st March. We will be welcoming you into school to meet with your child's teacher and to see the children's books. We will sending booking information in the next couple of weeks so please ensure you book as soon as you can.

In the sections below you will be able to find out more about the different classes and what they have been learning this week, but don't forget to follow us on Twitter for up to the minute news about the school- ShacklewellE8

Have a great weekend and I look forward to seeing you all at the school gate on Monday morning.

Rory

EYFS Update

Our Reception pupils have had a wonderful start to their half term as they had a special visitor come in this week. Pupils were very lucky to have Kelly, who works at Hackney Recycling, come in and tell them all all about recycling. She kindly gave Reception a recycling bin and a food waste bin for the classrooms - children have already become excellent at sorting out class rubbish!

Key Stage 1 Update

Key Stage 1 have had a fantastic week settling back into school routines after a lovely half term.

In Year 1, pupils have been learning all about the five different types of plants - herbs, shrubs, trees, climbers, and creepers. They went on a plant hunt around the school and used an identification chart to help recognise the different types of plants they could see. In maths, pupils jumped at the chance to show off their mathematical reasoning skills. They really enjoyed working away at this week’s ‘Solve It’ in the sun!

In Year 2, pupils also started their new Science topic on plants. They made careful observations of common plants and trees and identified similarities and differences between them. We were very impressed at how much they could remember from Year 1! In maths, Year 2 have started to look at the relationship between fractions of a shape and of a quantity and have also explored the different ways in which they can represent halves, quarters and thirds.

Key Stage 2 Update

It has been a great week for Key Stage 2 pupils, coming straight back into an exciting week of learning.

In Year 3, they have been learning all about the Ancient Egyptians and really enjoyed a virtual visit from the British Museum, where they learnt more facts about their History topic for this half term. Feeling very inspired as historians, pupils gathered together some secondary resources and turned the classroom into a museum!

Year 4 pupils have been learning all about decimals in maths. They have made connections between prior learning (fractions) and how it links to decimals. They have also been comparing numbers together with one decimal place, displaying their understanding using symbols and jottings to add depth to their knowledge.

In Year 5, pupils have been learning about how the Earth spins on an axis as it orbits the Sun and how the Moon orbits the Earth without spinning. 5S and 5W headed outside to replicate these movements by role-playing as the Sun, Earth and Moon in the playground. They made films of their efforts. Some out of this world learning!

This week in maths, our Year 6 pupils have been exploring area and perimeter of compound rectilinear shapes and in PE, they have been developing their focus and hand-eye coordination skills in basketball.

Finally, we wanted to share with you some wonderful pictures of Year 6's visit to PGL - they had a marvellous time!
