8th March 2019

Dear Shacklewell families,

As this week draws to a close I cannot overstate how amazing it has been. The children and staff had an absolutely fantastic World Book Day, when the whole school came alive with characters from across the literary universe. We had daring heroines, clever detectives, grumpy crayons, OAP burglars and wise wizards. The children made a huge effort with their costumes and I must say I enjoyed the huge variety and creativeness of so many of them!

Children from across the school were able to hear stories from different teachers and visit other classes to read , as well as having the opportunity to talk about the reasons they had dressed up as a specific character. Some children were able to visit the bookshop to exchange their £1 voucher for a brand new book. The best thing about World Book Day is that it shines a light on the fun of reading, but for us here at Shacklewell it is just one of the many things we do to enhance our already evident love for books and the culture of reading.

World Book Day

When there is a huge event like World Book Day it is easy to overlook the day to day work of our school, so I wanted to draw your attention to some other great things this week. On Wednesday our cross federation athletics enrichment began with some children from Year 5 heading off to Mile End athletics track for personalised sports coaching. The new Maker Mats have been shared this week, alongside the curriculum leaflets. Both of these documents are designed to help you know more clearly what is happening in your child's class. If you have any questions about the Maker Mats or the Curriculum Leaflet then do not hesitate to speak with your child's class teacher.

Coming up on Friday is Red Nose Day and we are asking the children to come in dressed head to toe in red. To support this great cause, may we ask that you give a small donation if your children do wear red on Friday.

I hope you all have a great weekend,

Rory

Mathematics

In mathematics this week the children have been working hard on their reasoning. We have developed a new approach to reasoning which allows the children a longer period of time in lessons to demonstrate their mathematical thinking. As we develop this further the children will be expected to showcase their understanding with accurate picture, diagrams and with concrete resources.

IPC

In our topic learning this week we have been focusing on varied ways of representing our understanding. The children have been creating diagrams, working collaboratively to complete knowledge maps, and refining their sketch work to increase their skills.

We are delighted to let you know that Dr Bike is back with us on Tuesday 12th March, 8.30am-10.30am.

As usual, Dr. Bike will preform free bike checks, minor repairs and general cycling TLC. There will also be a delicious Biker's Breakfast available.

Many thanks to Hackney Sustainable Travel for the funding which supports our commitment to active travel, clean air and healthy bodies.

Looking forward to seeing you in the top playground with your bikes on Tuesday morning.

Hackney Council has produced a brilliant booklet aimed at getting children outside and into the borough's open spaces.

The beautifully illustrated booklet suggests new places to explore, new activities to try and ways in which the children can find out more about nature.

Please click the link to find a copy of the booklet and enjoy exploring our boroughs hidden gems.

BINGO NIGHT SUCCESS

Thank you to everyone who attended our Bingo Night last Friday. It was a really fun evening.

We raised £353.76 - not bad for a couple of hours! Special thanks to all the volunteers who helped prepare the event and those who helped on the day. A huge thank you to Tasmin who project-managed the event. If you fancy volunteering, or even project-managing a future event, that would be a huge help. Contact info@shacklewellfamilies.com

HACKNEY HALF MARATHON- SUNDAY 19th MAY.

Can you help raise money for our Summer trips?

Many of the children have signed up to run a mile every Friday after school which will culminate in their final mile being run at the Hackney half marathon. We also have many parents/guardians running the full course.

Last year friends & families sponsored runners and made £1,000, but this year we want to go one better and raise enough to pay for all Shacklewell children to go on a celebratory summer trip.

If you or your child are running and you would like to know more then please contact Naomi or Dan at info@shacklewellfamilies.com
