25th January 2019

This week at Shacklewell has been incredibly busy because of the international BETT Showcase, which involves teachers from all over the world, visiting London to experience technology shaping learning in classrooms.

At the beginning of the week, children in year four presented their coding work at the Apple Leadership Summit at Tobacco docks to over 200 people. The children had created Roman chariots and used Sphero robots to make them move. By combining the code from their iPad with the robot they were able to hold chariot races. The attendees at the Tobacco docks were blown away by our children's confidence, passion and ability to explain their learning.

On Thursday and Friday it was the rest of the schools' opportunity to demonstrate their learning as Shacklewell played host to over 55 visitors from across Europe. These international colleagues were absolutely stunned by the school environment, the children's dedication to their learning and their pride in their school. It has been excellent to share Shacklewell with so many professionals this week and have the great work we do every day recognised on the international stage.

In the week ahead we have our first 'Come Learn With Me' for the Spring term. On Thursday 31st at 9.00am the families in Year 3 will come and share a learning activity with their children focussed on reading. It is Year 4 families opportunity to come in and join us a few weeks later for a Valentines themed 'Come Learn with Me' on 14th February at 9.00am.

Have a great weekend!

As part of Hackney and Proud, the top hall has been brought to life with the children's incredible artwork. Nursery have been exploring their school, and have made a wonderful multimedia display using the children's hands and foot prints to bring it to life. Reception have been researching Ridley Road Market and have created a beautiful display showcasing the classic market fare.

Year 1 have been inspired by the overground stations in Hackney and have created a collage of TfL signs that show the children's favourite places to go in Hackney. Year 2 have been studying the beautiful architecture of the Hackney Empire and have made a bright and colourful Paul Klee inspired replica.

Year 3 have focused on the London Fields Lido and have created an imaginative piece depicting swimmers enjoying a dip. Year 4 have researched the beautiful Sutton House and have created intricate drawings through window panes to show what is inside.

Year 5 have created David Hockney inspired 'joiners' using various images of Hackney Town Hall to create an abstract piece. Finally, year 6 have designed intricate flowers to adorn the Abney Road sign in homage to the beautiful cemetery. We hope you enjoy the pictures and please make sure to pop into the hall to see them.

Learning 25th January

This week the children have been continuing to use their knowledge organisers to help make links within their topic-based learning. Our BETT visitors were amazed at the incredible knowledge the children had of their topics and the creative ways in which they presented their learning.

Arithmetic sessions have begun this week in all classes from years 2-6 at the start of every maths lesson. This focus on arithmetic and rapid recall will improve the children's mathematical fluency and confidence with operations and place value.

We have also had the first Times Tables Champions awarded this week to children who have proved that they are absolute masters of their given times tables by knowing them forwards, backwards, in any order, the related division facts and embedded in a word problem! Those certificates are well deserved!

Our computing curriculum received high praise this week when our international guests visited lessons. They were so impressed with the confidence and skill of the all children who were able to articulately explain their learning and the resilience they had when encountering problems or errors.

It is important that our children are aware of cyber-bullying: what it looks like, the impact it has, and why it happens. CBBC's 'Own it' has an excellent selection of videos suitable for KS2 children about how to recognise cyber-bullying and advice for what to do if you think it is happening to you.

Please follow this link to videos you can watch with your child on the subject.

Thank you to everyone who attended last Friday’s meeting. We voted to contribute towards topic books to support learning for IPC. We’ll also be contributing towards new playground equipment. This was made possible through the success of the Christmas Fair and other events held last year.
