I would like to wish you all a very happy new year and welcome you back to this new academic term at Shacklewell. It has been a personal highlight of my week hearing about all of the fantastic holiday activities that our children enjoyed. Whether it was family time in London or trips to far flung corners of the globe, it is clear that Shacklewell children had a great break and they are refreshed and ready to go for the spring term.
We have hit the ground running this week with brand new initiatives already under way. Our new whole school topic, 'Hackney & Proud' has inspired some through provoking discussions and our new Knowledge Organisers have already resulted in some incredibly thoughtful questions. We have also been thinking carefully about our reading at school. May I take this opportunity to remind you that the children must bring their reading book and reading journal to school everyday. This allows the adults in school to keep an eye on the children's reading, even on days when books are not being changed. I look forward to seeing all of the children with their reading books and reading journals in their hands as they arrive to school on Monday.
I have some incredibly exciting news about a key change to how we communicate with all our parents. From now on all communications from the school will be sent through a digital app called Xpressions. In order to access this service you must download the app from the Apple app store or Google Play- simply search for Xpressions and it will appear. In order to login all that is required is the phone number and email address provided to the school. Once you have entered these details you will be able to set up your account and see messages from the school. The app is also designed to allow you to interact and reply to us. If you would like guidance on how to access this service please ask to see Ms. King at the school office who will help you download and login. We will be holding a parental information session on Monday 21st January at 9.00am to answer any questions and to offer technical support with this transition to Xpressions.
Nursery parents please be aware that the deadline for applying for Reception places in September is fast approaching. Please ensure all applications are submitted by the morning of Tuesday 15th January. If you require any assistance then please do not hesitate to speak with the office.
This term is as busy as ever and we have some key events coming up. During the week of 21st January educators from around the world will be coming to visit us as part of the annual BETT show. Children will have the opportunity to showcase their learning to the entire world during a series of visits from international colleagues. During the week of 5th February we will all be focusing on Internet Safety to ensure the children are given the tools required to be safe in their digital lives. Our Year 6 children are currently counting down the days until 11th February for their trip to PGL, one of the highlights of their Shacklewell experience.
I hope you all have a great weekend and I look forward seeing you on Monday morning!
Building on the success of our 'Know Me Before You Teach Me' project in the autumn, today we launched our new topic, 'Hackney & Proud'.
We want the children to recognise and understand how amazing it is to live and study in Hackney. We also want to promote a sense of pride in their borough and to encourage them to be responsible citizens in their community.
Throughout the term the children will be visiting key locations in Hackney including the Town Hall, Dalston Junction, Sutton House and Abney Park. They will be creating art work inspired by their key locations which will shape the hall displays for this term. The children will also develop a sustainability project which will allows them to think more carefully about their role in the future of Hackney.
Please explore the map to find out your child's significant Hackney location for this exciting new topic.
The children at Shacklewell absolutely love their IPC curriculum learning. A key part of this excitement and passion for their learning is because of the new knowledge that the children develop. In order to support them and to enhance this part of our school each IPC topic will now have an accompanying Knowledge Organiser.
These documents are designed to show the children the key facts, vocabulary and ideas that they will explore in their IPC curriculum.
Please talk to your children about the knowledge they are developing in order to help them understand the links their learning has to the real world.
Over the Christmas holiday lots of children at Shacklewell were fortunate enough to receive new digital technology as a gift.
Whilst these new devices can be hugely exciting for the children it can raise some difficult conversations about what they should or should not access online.
A fantastic new resource, 'ParentInfo' has been launched by CEOP in order to equip parents with the knowledge they need to support their children online.

Happy New Year from Shacklewell Families! Thank you to all the families in our community who helped to make 2018 a fun and successful year.
Our next meeting is: Friday 18th of January at 9am.
We held 6 events in total in the first term of the academic year including, say hello to Shacklewell families, cake & uniform sale, Shacklewell Day, Fright Night and the Christmas Fair .
Throughout the year we contributed funds towards the science lab, the Anti-bullying project the whole school pantomime and the First News subscription.
Most importantly we engaged lots of new families and volunteers from our diverse community which was great to see. We always need more volunteers to help, plan and prepare for our events so if you think you may have a bit of time and would like to be more involved, then let us know. We need new ideas for events too so come along to a meeting or email us to share your thoughts,
If you don’t have time to come along, then you can always help/contribute from home. This could be making decorations, printing, baking etc.
We especially need someone to help with admin so if you think this is something you can do then please let us know.
Our planned events so far for the year are:
Valentines Cake sale
Bingo night
Bake off
Spring Fair
Summer Fair
Thanks again for the support of all families and friends at Shacklewell.
