Dear families,
Another wonderful week has finished!
The children have all been creatively contributing to the hall displays this week and I have to say, I think this term's are the best yet!
The whole school theme of 'Know Me, Before you Teach Me' has been encapsulated in such varied and exciting ways. The children across the school have shared their collective and individual passions and interests and the teachers have helped them shape a truly eye catching hall display. Please make sure that you pop in to see their wonderful work in the top hall when you are next in school.
Just two of the fantastic 'Know Me, Before You Teach Me' displays
This week we have continued our focus on building our vocabulary. The children are all really engaged with developing how they speak and the types of words they are using in their work. It was a joy to see this coming though in their writing and IPC learning this week. Our three words of the week were residence, venerable and prominent.
This week has also seen the beginning of the works to build our new classrooms. We appreciate your patience as we all adjust to the new routines. It was very exciting for the children on Friday because the builders marked out exactly where the new classroom would be built. For many of them this was the first sign that this long awaited project was truly beginning!
Thank you for all of the feedback about Google classroom. We realise that as we transition to this new mode of delivering home learning we might experience a few teething problems.
On Friday 28th, 9.00am-9.45am we will be holding a parent workshop in the top hall to support all parents in years three, four, five and six. This will help the community understand our expectations as a school, how to access and how to return home learning using Google classroom. If you are unable to attend the session please speak to your class teacher if you have any questions.
Coming up next Friday we have a visit from the Parliamentary Outreach team. They will be explaining the role of parliament in our democracy to children in years three, four, five and six.
We also have Shacklewell Day on Friday night, more details of which can be found below in the Shacklewell Families section.
The children in year year two and year five had the chance to experience the sights, sounds and smells of the countryside this week.
Our annual trip to countryside live at the Lee Valley Park allowed the children to interact with a host of animals. The children also had the opportunity to make candles, watch a sheep show and make seed bombs.
Perhaps the most exciting part of the visit however was during the mini-beast hunt children in year five found a wasp spider (Argiope bruennichi). They are so uncommon that the organiser had to revert to his guidebook to identify it. At Shacklewell we are always inquisitive!
As part of our IPC Learning the children across the school have been undertaking 'Entry points'. These activities are designed to enthuse the pupils about their new academic topic.
Children in year one are studying different events from history in a unit called 'Time Travellers'. They were able to travel back to the time of the dinosaurs using augmented reality technology.
Children in year three, who are studying 'Scavengers and Settlers' imagined what it would have been like to live in a cave. They studied and recreated cave paintings on the playground to demonstrate their understanding.
Their friends in year four were able to combine their writing weeks book 'The Lost Thing' with their IPC unit. They had to navigate their way through the school because they are studying explorers.
The children will now take these exciting experiences and use them to engage with the topics they are covering this half term.
We are the volunteer parent/guardian association that fundraises for the school through fun events and everyone is a member! Get involved and help us raise money for the extras that help enhance the lives of our children at school. Things we have contributed towards at Shacklewell:
