It is unbelievable that we only have two more weeks before the end of this half term. It has been a busy but exciting 6 weeks and I am incredibly proud of our entire school community and all the learning that happens each day at Shacklewell.
There have already been some outstanding 'Maker Mat' creations brought into school. The new Home Learning focus on being creative and curious is obviously a huge success with everyone. Whether it is making an inspired cardboard Colosseum, designing delicious signature dishes, building tall towers out of marshmallows or designing and building egg transporters; it is obvious learning through curiosity and creativity has an enormous impact. With under a fortnight left, if you have not brought in your 'Maker Mat' marvels yet, get busy! The quality and ingenuity of everything that has come in so far is incredible. I cannot wait to see more!
The Reading Journals are now well established as part of our school routine. Pupils keep them up-to-date by adding comments about the books they are reading independently. Remember the expectation is that Reading Journals are brought in every day, teachers and/or parents can sign them. We feel they encourage reading and provide children with opportunities to analyse their books. If for some reason your child forgets to bring it into school please remind them. The teachers need your help and support with this.
Finally, I would like to say thank you to our Year 5 parent, Rosie Hackett for bringing in some amazing Roman costumes for the children to see and try on. It really helped some pupils visualise Ancient Roman life through clothes and uniforms. What did the Roman senators and soldiers really look like? The questions pupils were asking aroused a deep curiosity in their school topic, 'The Great, The Brave and The Bold'. If you think you have anything to contribute please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher or myself. Once again, thanks Rosie you obviously have amazing classical contacts.
Have a great week.
Fright night is this week and the SPA need your help to make sure the event is a huge success. Can you cook up something creepy for the Halloween cake sale? If so just bring it to the Office on the day. Savoury treats are welcome too, but remember - no nuts or sesame seeds!
No SPA Fright Night can happen without the (zombie) army of volunteers wielding their gruesome magic all over the hall and playground. SPA have 3 main areas they need help with; in the kitchen team, manning stalls and helping set up. If you can offer your time then email Ping to let her know!
Have some loose change lying about at home? Well the SPA have now left a bottle at the office which is ready to be filled up with your spare pennies! Please drop by the office and Betty will be more than willing to help you drop your coins in! If you look after the pennies, we will look after the pounds...!
Our Orienteering Team were amazing on Wednesday afternoon, taking part in the third event of the School Games Orienteering League at Clissold Park.
With just a topographical map to help with directions and a 1 mile run, our team took it all in their stride. A fab performance with all returning with hearts thumping and jubilant that they had completed the course.
And guess who we met there; our friends from Grazebrook! Well done guys, you were super too! Nothing like a little New Wave Federation school competition!
At Shacklewell we love to promote creativity in our students and this is true of our after school clubs as well.
During Art Bash the children created individual pieces of art during a carousel of activities which included leaf making, sketching and unique fine art techniques! In cooking club the children have created treats ranging from salads, pies and fish parcels. Our family bike club is proving as popular as ever, with even our youngest community members having a go!
Always looking for ways to let you know what is happening at school. Have a look at some of the highlights below and remember you can join in the conversation yourself by following @ShacklewellE8.
This week we have been using Explain Everything to help shape our learning.
It is an excellent app which allows the children to write, take pictures and record their voice to demonstrate their learning.
It is also a fantastic way of organising their ideas and working with their partners.
Explain Everything is free to use and it could help you develop your child's logical thinking, vocabulary and problem solving.
