Dear Families,
It has certainly been a spectacular weekend! Those of you who braved the cold over the weekend in Clissold or Victoria Park for the Hackney 2017 firework show, were treated to a fantastic display. Wherever you were, I hope you enjoyed the weekend.
The new Maker Mats and Curriculum Leaflets went home on Friday. Please take time to decide what appeals to your child as a family. There is a lot of choice and please remember that you are not expected to do everything on the mats; two or three things done well and enjoyed is the purpose of it all. Once your child has completed any of the tasks on their Maker Mats they are encouraged to bring their work into school.
Please keep up with the Reading Journals, make regular comments and remember to bring them into school everyday. One of the Senior Leaders will check each classes' Reading Journals weekly to ensure that they continue to be successful.
A huge thank you to SPA - our continuously supportive parents, for agreeing to pay for the annual subscription to 'First News', an online newspaper that is now available for all KS2 pupils. They have also agreed to purchase new wet play boxes just in time for the wet weather ahead and plant autumn and winter bulbs for the woodland area.
Finally, thank you to our wonderful staff for their hard work and for continuing to go above and beyond! We are lucky to have them and I know that you feel the same way.
Have a lovely week.
On Tuesday morning parents with children in the Nursery and Reception will be welcomed to the school to find out to how to use the Interactive Learning Diary. Mrs. Dardis will also explain how to upload observations from home and will troubleshoot any problems that may have occurred with logging in.
On Thursday morning, Mr. McGrath will be hosting a workshop for all parents. This workshop will focus on how to help your children stay safe online, how to talk to your children about difficult online issues and there will also be a chance to experience online resources that promote online safety.
Both workshops run from 9.00am until 10.00am and refreshments will be provided.
Our Parent Survey closed on Friday 3rd November and we are so grateful for the feedback.
94% of those who responded agreed that Maker Mats have had a positive impact on their child's desire to complete home learning. 75% felt that the Maker Mat had encouraged more opportunities to complete home learning together as a family and the same number liked the range of activities on the Maker Mat.
The written feedback section has proved to be incredibly useful and the main suggestion is that whilst the Maker Mats had promoted a curious and creative home learning environment that the expectation to complete four pieces was perhaps too much. This is something we will address for this term.
Another question asked about the Maker Mats was how it links with the wider curriculum. The Maker Mat is not designed to reinforce the content being delivered in the classroom, rather compliment and enhance it. The ethos of creativity and curiosity is the priority so some of the tasks will be open ended rather than tailored to the exact topic being studied in class.
A final thank you to those of you who volunteered time and expertise; we will be in touch over the coming weeks!
We are pleased to announce the return of Bikers' Breakfast. On Wednesday 22nd November Dr Bike and the team will be coming into Shacklewell to work with your bikes for free! It doesn't matter if you cycle everyday, some days or only when it is sunny, you can drop your bike into the top playground and the team will give it the once over. What's more, if you do bring your bike that day you will be able to sample the fantastic free breakfast.
Always looking for ways to let you know what is happening at school. Have a look at some of the highlights below and remember you can join in the conversation yourself by following @ShacklewellE8.
Hopscotch is our app of the week.
Hopscotch is designed to teach children how to code using a block based system.
The bright, easy to use interface helps the children interact with it, and the pre set challenges and tasks help the children quickly progress their skills.
Hopscotch is a great way of teaching the children about a variety of coding techniques, and as you can see from the video, which was entirely created within the app, it can be a lot of fun!
