Dear Parent/Carers.
Last Friday, I was invited by Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, to attend City Hall for a very special award ceremony. Shacklewell was selected amongst a few other London schools, due to our exceptional contribution in boosting the education of children in London.
This was a fine tribute to our school, which I am extremely proud to celebrate with the staff and governors. Shacklewell will now wholeheartedly contribute to raising achievement of lower achieving schools across London in the Mayor's 'School for Success' program. This is a great honour and one that reflects our ethos of 'Excellence for All'.
One of the reasons why we are so successful is the very high expectations we set ourselves. This term we have been focusing on improving our writing in fiction and non-fiction genres. We have been stimulating our imaginations in order to use language effectively and purposefully. Pupils are always encouraged to hone in on specific skills and continually edit and check their work independently. Please be reminded that you can now view some of the pupils writing work on pobble.com.
This week I am launching a headteacher's award for Best Inventor. I will be looking at how pupils engage with their Maker Spaces inside the classroom as well how pupils ask questions and develop their own curiosity. The winners will be announced in next Monday's assembly.
After school clubs are up and running at Shacklewell and as you can see we are offering a wide range of activities which cater for all of our children's interests. Some selected highlights include salsa, gymnastics, digital film making and code club.
I look forward to seeing many of you in the playground over the next week.
Nicole
Shacklewell received official news of its Key Stage 2 results last week. We are very proud to announce that 96% of the children who left us in the summer achieved the expected national standard in reading, writing and mathematics.
This means that almost every child left our school at the standard expected by the national curriculum and this is something we are incredibly pleased about.
The children's and teacher's hard work paid off and it was worth it because we are the number one school in the borough in this combined results measure.
We are already looking ahead to next summer and cannot wait to improve on these results even further.
Excitement was in the air this morning as our Year 5 children took part in the 'On Road Cycle Training' under the guidance of Cycle Confident UK and Hackney's Sustainable Travel Team.
The aim of the course is to give children the skills and knowledge to use their bike safely and effectively on quiet roads. The children are taught in a group and are under the direct supervision of two experienced instructors at all times. After taking part in fun games and exercises in the playground the children are taken onto the roads to be introduced to the basic rules of the Highway Code.
Our fabulous free Folks on Spokes Family Bike and Cycling Club continues meeting weekly each Monday 3.45pm-5.15pm however ends on Monday 16th October. If you would like to attend, sessions take place in the KS1 playground after school.
Despite the rain, SPA made a wonderful £261 at the cake sale on Friday afternoon.
The proceeds will be shared with Macmillan Cancer, and our SPA to buy amazing things for all our children.
Ping and the rest of SPA would like to say a huge well done to the talented bakers, generous buyers and the dedicated sellers! A special mention to Sam (Parent in Y3) for her great work on those Shacklewell aprons!
Remember that Friday 13th October is 'Fright Night' if you can spare some time to support this spooky event, the SPA would be hugely grateful. Email Ping if you can lend a hand and we look forward to seeing you all there!
Last week the pupils in Year 2 and Year 5 had a taste of the countryside.
The children spent the day at Lea Valley Park hunting bugs, wicker weaving, and learning how materials for clothes are made.
They also had a chance to see some live sheep shearing and some stunning birds of prey up close!
Always looking for ways to let you know what is happening at school, a lot of our teachers have started their own professional Twitter accounts. Have a look at some of the highlights below and remember you can join in the conversation yourself by following @ShacklewellE8.
