English I, American Literature, Humanities, and Writing Through Film 2021-2022
As a Newtown High School graduate, I am truly excited to continue to be part of the NHS community and teach in the English department for the 2021-22 school year.
I am looking forward to a year full of reading, writing, challenging, exploring and thinking about literature. That includes how literature impacts us, our communities, society and the world. Given the nature of this year, I'm excited to learn how to navigate this with all of you, too!
This year I am teaching two CP American Literature classes, two Honors English I classes, Humanities (fall) and Senior Experience (spring).
As we get ready for the year to begin, I will post syllabi for the classes as well as other resources for you and your families.
REQUIRED SUPPLIES
This year will be an exciting and challenging year and the best way to get off to a solid start is to come to school prepared and ready to learn!
In the interest of that goal, please have with you:
A digital device - ideally a laptop or chromebook with a charge that will cover the day. As at least half your peers will be home at any given time, and we are socially distancing within the room, our best opportunities for collaboration and discussion will take place digitally. If you do not have a reliable device, please reach out to your AP or guidance counselor. A cell phone will work in many instances, and generally speaking you all move sometimes more efficiently on your phones anyway
Some place to store physical papers - Some assignments will be digital and some will be physical, so it might be a good idea to have a folder. They're slim and don't take up much room. Everything will be holepunched, though, so if you did want to keep a slim binder with you for materials, that works, too.
Something to take notes in - while a lot of things will be digital, there will be many times where I will ask you to write. This can be loose-leaf paper in a binder, a spiral-bound notebook. Hand-writing notes has been scientifically proven to allow for greater recall and as such has great value. AND, it's good to get off the screens!
Pens (blue or black) and pencils - make sure you find a way to hold on to these, as we are trying to significantly curtail the sharing of supplies .
Access to your GoogleDrive - be sure it's your school one.
Enthusiasm! We will have a great year!
Not "required" but might be nice to have:
Highlighters
A pack of post-it notes (any size or color) for annotation
A pack of colored pencils or markers to avoid sharing materials with other classes.
