In third grade, I use a curriculum based on John Feierabend’s Conversational Solfege, Edwin Gordon's Jump Right In!, and Barb Philipak's Recorder Karate.
Third graders meet twice per week, and one of those days is dedicated to recorder learning. In recorder class, approximately half of their class time is spent working as a class to improve recorder skills and introduce new concepts. The second half of class is devoted to individual practice and individual check-ins with the teacher.
I use an adapted version of Recorder Karate, where each song is either a learn by ear (figure out how it goes using notes and rhythms you already know), learn by eye (figure out how a song goes by reading the notation), or write your own (compose your own melody using a pre-written or student-written rhythm) song. During individual check-ins, the teacher checks on student progress, and if a student has mastered a specific song, they earn a "belt," a piece of string tied to the bottom of their recorder, and can begin working on their next belt.
Once third graders are ready, we use the Conversational Solfege system to internalize, hear, say, read, and write rhythmic and melodic patterns. Third grade students also focus on internalizing the basics of musicianship: listening, steady beat, rhythmic composition and understanding, using a healthy singing voice, expressing music through movement, and audiating (hearing music in your head).
