The Modern Metabolism

The goal of our thesis is to develop a healthy, multi-sensorial, and sustainable system of small-space living in the modern urban city, exploring the adaptive reuse of an iconic structure for intergenerational and interspecies communities. Through the actions of removing and adding onto the existing structure, we are revitalizing a 1970s Metabolism mixed-use residential tower located in Tokyo, Japan, taking into account both its local ecology as well as its social dynamics.

Hello!

Welcome to our Independent Study: Capstone Thesis. You have entered Siran's individual page, (wow I just called myself in third person) but my thesis is not an individual project. As you can see on the left, I have decided to do my thesis with my classmate and best friend, Elmira Moskvina. The distance between us due to the circumstances was not a problem at all since we call each other everyday anyway :) Together, we bring you the Modern Metabolism.

Please remember to take note of our two starring characters in our drawings (the resident colored in pink and the visitor colored in yellow), and don't let the little details escape your sight!

Final Iteration

Brighten up your eyes with set after set of pink-colored drawings and diagrams. Remember to pay attention to our pink (resident) and yellow (visitor) characters who will be walking all over the place!

Process Work

Early ideas, process sketches, and "grandfathers" of our current iteration. Come and take a look through our semester long journey.

Siran Xiang

Born in China, grew up in Canada, I have chosen to study architectural design at the Parsons School of Constructed Environments because I love to create and build in a three-dimensional format.

Not only are these conceptual spaces important to me, so are the characters that live here and the kind of stories they are able to undergo, making this storytelling aspect as a major attribute I try to implement into all of my work.
