Project Description: Emberance is an alternative burial system that combines the science of Promession with the traditions of North American funerals. Promession, the method of deep freezing a body with liquid nitrogen and vibrating it to turn it in dust, was developed by Swedish biologist Susanne Wiigh-Masak in 1997. My project mixes promession dust with seaweed and plant seeds inside of a biodegradable coffee ground vessel to be planted in the Earth and sprout plants. Emberance aims to give control back to grieving families who are often taken advantage of by the American funeral industry, paying exorbitant fees for cremation, burial, plots, and embalming, all of which are bad for the environment. Whether you want to keep your loved one's remains at home, or plant them somewhere special, Emberance adapts to your wants and needs.
Emberance Project Book
My capstone book for Emberance covers the material process behind the project, and explains the choices made.
Samantha Schillinger
Samantha grew up in Poughkeepsie, NY, and attended Spackenkill High School, graduating in 2016. Since then, she has worked on a dairy farm for three years, worked in Alaska for a non-profit on scholarship sponsored by the Tishman foundation, and worked for a family friend's furniture company. She makes and sells resin jewelry and home goods, illustrates, and spends as much time outdoors as possible. Her interest in alternative burial systems comes from a morbid curiosity in the process of decomposition, forensic sciences, and environmental activism.
