The home for outsiders

In the past, people lived closer to each other; neighbors were familial, where people often casually shared spaces. However, today’s society privileges separate and independent living environments thus, the relationship between individuals has become increasingly separated. As an interior designer, I want to create a friendly short-term housing with safe communal spaces for international students with an adaptive reuse building. Creating a familial community for international students creates opportunities for them to communicate and learn from individuals from other cultures. This type of community provides a safe and friendly short-term living space for international students before they find their long-term housing.

As interior designers, how can we reestablish historical buildings and provide a friendly and safe short-term housing with communal space for international students?

I believe this project bears a rooted meaning for international students, myself included. To have an international hub like this could be helpful to foreigners who leave their homes to adapt to a new territory and face challenges in the process. International students could stay in this hub for a short term in order to familiarize themselves with the new environment during their stay. Alternatively, they are offered a long lasting connection to a home away from home because it would act as the first point of cultural assimilation. The home for outsiders acts as not only a place to sleep but to create a community, a home.
