ZEN
A SHELTER FOR YOUR INNER SERENE
In Buddhist language, Zen is a verb which refers to the behavior of calmness. The word Zen is a Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word “Chan”, in the buddhist origin India, it means the practice of dhyana which can be translated into “meditation”. There are many small Zen/ Buddhism communities in NYC. As a subculture, the project can offer a place for gathering and increasing communication between Zen communities and the public. More importantly, to serve as a center for helping mental health problems like anxiety and drug addiction issues in the neighborhood through the practice of slowness and calmness.

DESIGN PROPOSAL
Breath – Calm – Serene Located at 300 Ashland in Fort Greene, downtown Brooklyn, this is a space of silence, focused on meditation and reading, aimed to help people seek for calmness. Thus, the project will be a community center that serves both Zen communities and the public. The space is divided into two zones, open and silence by a library to smoothly circulate people from one to others. The open zone includes a public garden, library and restaurant on the 2nd floor. The silent zone has yoga studios on the 2nd floor and more intimate meditation space and silent sitting on the 3rd floor. Inspired by the essence of bamboo: flexibility, simplicity and strength, and most importantly, it represents harmony and balance in one’s life which has the same value of Zen, this project uses a lot of bamboo walls to divide the space. To touch and feel the textures become part of the experience, plus light and shadow together will lead people on the journey to their inner serene.
