The Alice was designed for my AAS Interior Design Studio III class in which we created a new brand identity for the iconic Chelsea Hotel in NYC.

The Alice

222 West 23rd Street , New York
The Alice began with the inspiring facade of the Chelsea Hotel, a homage to the Victorian-- and a reminder of Alice in Wonderland. While the beginnings of the hotel stemmed from these ideas, the design took a darker, moodier turn as melancholia took front and center as I developed the experiences of the hotel-- particularly the atrium turned terrarium and sensory deprivation tanks. Thus, the hotel transformed into an introspective experience for individuals, for one to wonder. The stained glass windows creating the core of the terrarium, were designed based on shapes found in local existing windows and those original to the building. Key rooms circle and look out into the terrarium, furthering the cycle of introspection in the hotel and create a labyrinth -like effect.

Berry Boeckman

I began my studies at Davidson College, where I graduated from in 2018 with BA in Art History. My brief stint as a gallery manager showed me I wanted to re-engage with my creative side in a career. I am greatly interested in how interiors impact the psyche and draw much of my inspiration from my art history studies that have provided me with an eclectic taste and appreciation for history and its connection to the future.
