Middle School Reading Support Services
6th Grade Intro- The incoming 6th grade students all begin the year using a phonics based program called Cracking the Code. This system is a very structured phonics program that must be mastered in order to be a successful reader.
Reading Literacy Workshop- If a child receives a score of a 2 on his/her ELA Exam from the previous year. Their score will be looked at to see where the student's deficiencies were. If the deficiency lies in the area of reading the student will be placed into an extra section of intense reading support. This support will be given on a daily basis for a 40 minute period with a Certified Reading Specialist. This period will be spent using materials that supplement what the students are learning in their English classes at that time. The lessons are varied based on individual learning styles and taught in a small group.
Parent Conferences – If a child is enrolled in a reading support program the child's reading teacher will attend the classroom parent conferences. However, if you would like to conference with us at anytime during the year just give us a call and we will make arrangements with you.
IST committee – The Instructional Support Team is comprised of the principal, school social worker, school psychologist, school nurse, a special education teacher, the classroom teacher and the child's reading teacher if applicable. The committee advises teachers on all levels about other methods to try with children. They may meet a few times a year on a particular child to problem solve. If we are considering testing a child for special education we need to go through this committee first. If, after meeting a variety of times on a particular child and trying several pre-referral strategies, then the committee may advise a teacher to recommend a child for special education testing. If this happens, the parents' approval will be required before any testing takes place.
