The goal of the reading program is to help students become proficient readers. Students participate in the Reading Program based on running record levels, NYS ELA scores, teacher recommendation and additional assessments.
The structure of the program is either a push-in or pull-out depending on student needs. The size of groups and frequency also depends on the student's needs.
IST committee – The Instructional Support Team is comprised of the principal, school social worker, school psychologist, school nurse, a special education teacher, the classroom teacher and the child's reading teacher if applicable. The committee advises teachers on all levels about other methods to try with children. They may meet a few times a year on a particular child to problem solve. If we are considering testing a child for special education we need to go through this committee first. If, after meeting a variety of times on a particular child and trying several pre-referral strategies, then the committee may advise a teacher to recommend a child for special education testing. If this happens, the parents' approval will be required before any testing takes place.
