Newlands College Music Department
The Newlands College Music Department strives for excellence and student participation. The Music Department gives opportunities to Newlands College students to participate and engage in academic music and in several co-curricular groups.
Students at Newlands College also have the ability to learn a musical instrument, through the Itinerant Music Scheme. Students that would like to enroll into the Itinerant Programme or obtain extra information may do so here
Newlands College also offer an extensive co-curricular programme. Students can get involved through groups such as;
- Northern Notes (Choir)
- Chamber Music
- Jazz Ensemble
- Ukulele Orchestra
- Rockquest & Play it Strange
- Junior Choir
- Polynesian Drum Group
- The Annual Musical
Keep an eye out in Assembly (at the start of the school year) or notices when the above groups begin.
At Newlands College, Music is compulsory at Year 9 and rotates between Arts and Drama throughout the year. At Year 10, Music is an option where students have three lessons a week for two terms. At Year 11, Year 12 and Year 13, again it is an option subject and students have four timetabled classes a week and work towards passing NCEA Level 1, 2 and 3 in Music.
