Week 37 - June 9-13
The grade 7's had a big role in helping out with the elementary track meet this week. They were busy measuring, timing, demonstrating & encouraging!
Setting up a sun tent isn't as easy as you might think..... especially when blindfolded! One team member could see, but couldn't help assemble the parts or the tent..... communication skills are key!
Week 36- JUNE!! - June 2-6
Always fun to play in the forest...... played some sardines, charades and camoflauge!
Students are learning about immigration. In 1872, to encourage immigrants to come to Canada, they were offered 160 acres of land. If they could make a profit and survive for three years, they were allowed to keep the land. Students are creating their own farms and budgeting, as well as receiving a random event card that can be either positive or negative. They will have to adapt their farm based on the event.
We wrapped up our "Planet Earth" unit with some presentations.... students picked a topic and became experts on the subject.
Week 35- May 26-30
This week, we looked at how tectonic plates move, and theories about where they once were.
This week we planted our 3 sisters crop plot! We are experimenting a bit as well - with one mound, we added ash, the second manure and the 3rd just regular garden dirt. We will see which mound of corn & beans grows best. The squash mounds also got some extra nutrients to test out with dried grass and ash in addition to one with just the garden dirt.
This week, the students spent time learning about the different numbered treaties and their relation to Canadian immigration. They then each chose a treaty to become experts on and presented it to the class.
Week 34- May 19-23
We used Starburst to work our way through the rock cycle... a fun edible experiment!
& Deer Ears
During outdoor ed this week, the grade 7's played a couple games including 'Deer Ears' in which one person is blindfolded & others try to sneak up and get the clothes pin off their back without getting caught!
We also played 'Who Am I' where students could only ask 'Yes/No' questions to try to figure out what they were!
Our days have been spent mostly outside this week with the beautiful weather!
Week 33 - May 12-15
When the weather is this nice.... we head outside!
We can't help but hang out with the ducklings when out in the barn for wood working class.
The Grade 7 class ended our Cowboys Don't Cry novel study with a diorama of their favorite scene from the book.
Week 32 - May 5-9
The junior high students headed to the Nordegg area this week for some camping, hiking & fishing. The weather cooperated with us but the fish didn't.
We welcomed some new turkey chicks this week as well as some new barnyard equipment. Some will help make feeding easier and less wasteful while some other equipment will make doctoring and hands on experiences a 'breeze'.
The junior high students hosted another successful Spring market! They created many awesome creations for the school and community to enjoy.
Week 31 - April 28 - May 2
We are getting our seeds started early t his year in our greenhouse! The grade 7's will be planting tomatoes and joining the 8/9's doing the three sisters garden.
Students are working on a short story with the setting being based in our barnyard. The girls and the sheep are trying to find some shade with the hot weather we have been lucky to have!
Week 30 - April 23-25
We joined the rest of the school for a school & barnyard clean up!
We got out to enjoy the sunshine during a hike - focusing on signs of spring that we could see, hear & smell!
We also tried out some games such as camouflage, memory & other brain games.
Students were tasked with finding something in nature to transform into a character in their creative writing unit!
Week 29 - April 14-17
The grade 7's helped the grade 2 class out building their solar ovens this week - it was their March Madness prize..... we hear the smores were delicious!
Pictionary Review - students played Pictionary to review key terms and concepts for their upcoming Structures & Forces Exam.
Our Badminton season came to a close this week. We headed to Beaumont to participate in the LDAA 'North' division.
The junior high class got to learn all about the benefits of tallow and even got to make their own!
Week 28 - April 7-11
The grade 7's were tasked with building a freestanding structure to hold an egg 30 cm above the desk & 10 cm out from the edge of the desk......
The junior high students were lucky enough to have a presentation on the adaptations of flight. The presenter even brought in a great horned owl!
Lots of hours have been spent outside this week with the warm weather. It's nice to see the students so excited about spending time outdoors and soaking up the fresh air.
Week 27 - March 24-28
We looked at compression, tension, shear & torsion forces using gummy bears!
We have new Humble Herd Critters! We welcomed some chicks & 4 piglets!
The Grade 7 students have been working hard on their charter projects and were excited to present them to their parents and peers, showcasing all their dedication and effort.
Week 26 - March 17-21
Did you know we have a grow tower?? We should be eating from it soon!
Busy week with the Ski Trip & Math Fair!!
Students headed to Rabbit Hill for a day on the hill.
The 7's headed out to put their understandings of graphing (bar & circle) to the test. They picked something in the barnyard to compare & spent the class gathering their data. Some students counted animals while others took on the added challenge of measuring to calculate area of different outbuildings. They then determined mean, mode, range and median for their data set. Afterwards, they created graphs to represent this data.
Week 25 - March 10-14
In Science we experimented with our centres of gravity! We may have fallen a few times;)
We also did some tangrams of natural and man made structures.
Learning about various jointery methods, building stronger structures and strong shapes.... we built some catapults!
Students are reading Cowboys Don't Cry in Language Arts. We headed out to the barn to read to the lambs!
Week 25 - March 3-7
We were very fortunate this week to have Alexis Marie Chute come in to our Photography class. She shared some valuable tips and tricks with us & gave us some time to play with lights.
The students did a fantastic job creating the Red River Resistance. A lot of work and detail went into it!
Lambing is in full swing at NHCS.... the eggs are also in the incubator so we should have some chicks in a couple weeks!
The Grade 7's started their Forces & Structures unit this week with a challenge.... to build the tallest freestanding tower using just 40 straws & 1 meter of tape.
To better understand the difference between solid, shell & frame structures - we built chairs....with playdoh.
All of the Junior High and grade 6 students got to head to Calmar this week to try their hand at curling.
Week 24 - February 24-28
This unit continues to be yummy! This week we built & put to the test some pizza box solar ovens. (Thank-you to Thorsby Family Restaurant for donating the pizza boxes to us!)
The Grade 7's headed out for some outdoor education this week - the focus was on tracks! We also discussed animal energy use and played a few games. (It was also crazy hair day)
Students projects are starting to come together nicely. They have been doing great working in groups and coming up with creative ideas to really showcase their learning!
Week 23 - February 18-21
We are patiently waiting for our sheep to lamb.... everyone has had the opportunity to take a guess as to when Blanche will give birth - her due date is March 6th.... will she be early??
Taking full advantage of the warmer weather on a beautiful Friday morning, we headed out to play predator - prey - one of the classes favourite activities!
We are working on a project building different forts and settlements to help the students better understand the Red River Resistance. Students are encouraged to use as many natural elements as they can, so we went outside to start collecting.
Week 22 - February 10-14
What better way to learn about conduction, convection & radiation than to make popcorn!!
Taking our understandings of conduction, convection & radiation, we headed to the barnyard to find as many examples of each as possible..... bonus points if nobody else had the same idea.
With all the cold weather students were getting cooped up so we turned the heat on in the barn and worked on our assignments with Peaches!
Week 21 - February 3-5
All the Junior High Students have started their new options..... Photography or Winter Sports. This week was a bit cold, but some of the photography students ventured out to get some fun "leading lines" photos!
We are immersing ourselves in Métis culture to help us understand why their traditions and practices are so important to them. Students are working on different projects, such as their dances, artwork, flag, and practices, to gain a better insight.
Week 20 - January 27-31
What better way to look at the changes of state then to have a hands on & yummy experiment! We made ice cream!!
A couple of agronomists from Leduc Co-op came to talk to the grade 7's about what they do..... helping farmers! We talked about soil nutrients, pests and technology.
Students spent time with the Grade 1s, reading them the poetry portfolios they have been working on and teaching them about various agriculture topics they researched!
Week 19 - January 20-24
Students learned some tracking basics and then were put to the test with a couple rounds of sardines. This also included some story time.
The fish eggs arrived last week and are already starting to hatch!
Week 18 - January 13-17
Showing & sharing our love of math this week! Every family gets to take home a brand new deck of cards and 6 dice so that they can play these games at home:)
Students all submitted their estimates on how much our pigs weigh as they are heading for processing!
Students have been hard at work creating a poetry portfolio on an agriculture topic they researched!
Week 17 - January 6-10
The ranch skills option put their branding skills to the test this week. Each student had the chance to practice different characters before making their own brand board to take home.
As part of the unit, students are now working on their final project for interactions & ecosystems. Students got to pick from a model demonstrating the 3 types of symbiotic relationships; a game showing their understanding of niches and interactions or a puzzle demonstrating their understanding of food chains, webs & pyramid of numbers.
The grade 7s have definitely been taking advantage of the weather being so nice this past week. They have been getting their work done outdoors as much as possible!
Week 16 - December 16-21
Many Junior high students participated in the Christmas Concert this week... They performed "Scrooge" and did a fantastic job!!
This 'year's' final SEED Day saw the junior high students creating their very own greenery masterpiece!
Students did a great job acting out different parts of the Rebellions of 1837 to deepen their understanding!
Week 15 - December 9-13
The junior high students got a first hand look at what it is like to run your own business. In this project, students needed to create a business plan and product to sell at our very own market. Students needed to connect their product/project to the charter as well. The market had everything from baked goods, home made ice-cream, wood and leather projects, to blankets, and sewing items. Many students sold out and even had an order list! Overall, it was a huge success!
Students were given 5 different adaptations of a bird - they then needed to draw this bird and explain what the adaptations did for it and where it might be found.
In science, we once again headed outside - this time was to examine different cycles in the environment including the water cycle, carbon & matter.
As we are in our poetry unit, this week's focus was on haikus. Students were tasked with spending time outside and writing multiple haikus based on things they saw outdoors. They then picked their favorite to display on the wall!
Week 14 - December 2-6
One of our Jr. High Options happening now is Leatherwork! Students have learned about things such as leather, stamping, conditioning, and painting. They have created a few key tags and are now working on their belts.
We headed outside to see how deer populations are constantly changing just based on what is available to them..... then we took it up a notch another day by adding in some predators. Students were then able to see how interconnected both species were with the basic requirements of all living things.
The students were excited to receive a visit from a local police officer, who gave them a tour of his patrol car and allowed them to try out some of the equipment!
Week 13 - November 25-29
The Grade 5s and 7s were able to enjoy a biodiversity presentation by Inside Education. The presentation focused on the deer family, and students participated in interactive games that helped them understand how the needs of different animals vary. They also learned how environmental changes can impact the number of species that can survive in a particular area, and how human activities can affect the ecosystem.
The grade 7's worked hard to create the garden section of our first ever Glo Art Walk! Each grade picked an animal from our barnyard to create..... families were invited to check it out during parent-teacher interviews this week.
We have been studying adaptations in animals in science class - this week, students selected random adaptation cards and had to create new fish! They then needeed to explain where they would find the fish and how those adaptations helped them survive.
Students have been working hard on their group project, digging into the War of 1812 and the different battles that took place during it. They were tasked with creating a presentation and presenting it to the class, with a strong focus on good presentation skills while speaking to their classmates.
Week 12 - November 18-22
All the junior high students got to check out the LRC this week
Students were out in the barnyard looking at what kind of adaptations our own animals have..... they also identified some learned behaviors and symbiotic relationships that exist in our barnyard.
Students got to see our very own sheep get preg checked this week.
Students are enhancing their ability to make inferences and interpret clues within the texts they read. As part of this learning process, they were challenged to create a scavenger hunt for one another in the barnyard, then venture out to uncover the answers.
Week 11 - November 4-8
Students were given different utensils to use to try to 'eat' with.... connecting this to the possibility that animals can die even though it looks like their is plenty of food around them. Some animals are better adapted to eat a variety of food sources.
Spending time out in the bush, students were challenged with just sitting & observing..... what types of animals did they see and hear. How do these animals meet their basic needs?
In social studies class, students researched Indigenous games, focusing on the life skills they taught and the cultural significance behind them. They then presented their findings, explaining the skills Indigenous peoples gained through each game. Afterwards, the students taught their peers how to play, shared the games's background, and everyone had the chance to try the games themselves.
Week 10 - October 28 - Nov 1
Starting our new unit in science, we jumped right in with some predator - prey action!
The grade 7's go right into Halloween and decorated all the doors they could!
Week 9 - October 21-25
We are wrapping up our unit on Plants for Food & Fiber.... what better way to review than to try to act out key terms or do some Pictionary!
We headed out for a walk and tried our hand at paying attention to details - with our eyes closed!
Week 8 - October 14-18
NHCS was fortunate enough to have the vet out to show students how a cow is preg. checked. Students were able to ask questions and see the ultrasound.
The junior high students got a chance to explore the creek and play camoflauge!
Students got their progress reports this week.... & they will have a hard time misplacing them😉
Week 7 - October 7-11
Students got to run around and get a hands on look at how biomagnification works.
We transplanted some of our peas & beans into cups from off the window...
Week 6 - September 30 - October 4
Students welcomed our newest barnyard animals!
We also said good-bye to our turkeys on Friday.
Grade 4-9 students had the opportunity to head to Wetaskiwin for the LDAA Cross-Country meet on Wednesday this week. Students enjoyed the trails and did awesome!
Friday afternoon, students participated in our first 'SEED' Day of the year. (Formally called Ag Fun Day)
Week 5 - September 23-27
We have been learning about the different parts of the plants including the flowers, seeds, leaves, stem and roots. Diving in further, we looked at the different parts of the flower.
We have also been working with a dichotomous key to help us identify plants!
The Terry Fox Run was held on Friday.... even Triscuit & Pepper ran a lap with everyone:)
We have also been helping get the barnyard ready for the pigs to arrive!
Week 4 - September 16-20
Our experiments are continuing to grow! We are really getting a good look at what plants need in order to survive. Still no life in the cup in the fridge or the one not getting any water (not a surprise there!)
We have been out in the backyard looking at different plants - comparing things like flowering vs non-flowering; vascular vs non-vascular......
Week 3 - September 9-13
The basic needs of plants has really been demonstrated by this cup experiment - just look at the difference between the lettuce in the closet versus the one in the window.... it is hard to believe they are the same plant!
A number of students are now out doing chores daily..... and our herd is expanding every week. Meet one of our two newest members.
Week 1/2 - August 28 - September 6
The grade 7's are settling into their new home.
In our science unit, we are examining the basic needs of plants. Our classroom has several experiments going on including beans and peas on the windows, lettuce with different growing conditions and leaves with food colouring.
Someone has been leaving behind little cows...... we have a bit of a herd going in the grade 7 room now!
