Instructional Organization:
Classroom instruction will consist of lecture, discussion, Q&A, problem solving, demonstration, labs/hands-on activities, interactive web activities, web quests, and cooperative learning. Students are expected to keep up with assignments to participate in the classroom activities.

Testing Requirements
In addition to chapter or unit tests, quizzes and major projects, there will be 4 common assessments given throughout the semester, which are major grades. Common assessment #1 covers Unit 1; Common Assessment #2 covers Unit 2; Common Assessment #3 covers Unit 3; Common assessment #4 covers Unit 4 and Common Assessment 5 covers Unit 5. There is not a state mandated end-of-course (EOC) test for Earth and Space Science.
Policy and Procedures:
Learning will be assessed in many different ways. Grading will be based specifically on classwork, quizzes, web quests, lab investigations, unit tests, hands-on activities, worksheets, lab reports (if applicable), projects, etc.
All students should complete their own work and should avoid academic dishonesty and misconduct in all its forms, including but not limited to: plagiarism, searching the internet for worksheet or quiz answers, going to the restroom to look on the internet using your phone, texting a friend for answers during a test or quiz from your class or another, etc.
MOST of the assignments are gone over IN class before they are submitted so the student gets the correct answers and completeness credit upon turning in the work. The only homework every night is to study the notes and practice worksheets or vocabulary words we have learned and discussed.

Grading Procedures:
The district wide weighting scale used for all assignments:
Major Assignments – 50%
Minor Assignments – 40%
Homework/Daily – 10%
The grading scale is as follows:
100-90 = A 79-70 = C 59-0 = F
89-80 = B 69-60 = D
Science Department Makeup and Re-do Policy:
If a student is absent, they are fully responsible for the material covered during that day, including bellwork. All assignments are listed in Schoology and students may get paper copies to complete from the teacher. Most assignments are given on paper so the student has a hard copy to study. It is the students’ responsibility to obtain the missing work from the teacher. For missing assignments, a grade of zero (o) will be given in place of that assignment in Powerschool, until the work has been turned in and graded.
The student will have five (5) consecutive school days to make-up major tests or missing assignments and remediate as per district policy. If the student does not turn in the designated assignment within five (5) school days, a grade of zero (0) will stay in the gradebook and the student will not be allowed to turn it in.
The student will receive half credit for test corrections made or in the instance of a RE-TEST, the two tests will be averaged together to get the test grade, which cannot exceed a 70%. Quizzes cannot be retaken for a better grade. Extra credit will be offered on tests or as separate assignments in order to enhance the student’s major grades!

South Carolina law now prohibits school districts from using a grading floor (minimum grade) that artificially raises a student's score. Beginning this school year, grades will reflect the actual work a student earns, providing families with a more accurate picture of academic progress.
Without the previous grading floor, it is more important than ever for students to complete assignments, seek help when needed, and monitor their grades throughout the semester. Students who are failing at the halfway point of the course have significantly less opportunity to recover their average because grades will no longer be inflated by a minimum score policy. Early intervention and consistent effort are essential for academic success.
