School Counseling Program Mission Statement
The mission of the Bridgepoint and Crossroads High School Counseling Program is to provide a comprehensive guidance, support, and instructional service to meet the academic, personal/social, and career goals of each student. School Counselors, in partnership with other stakeholders, strive to empower students to maximize their potential, become life-long learners, and posses the knowledge and skills to live a well-lived life.

I am honored and proud to serve Newark's community both as an Educator and parent of Newark Unified School District. Growing up in neighboring Union City, I recall the days when Newark had a roller skating rink and Dumbarton bridge was only two lanes. Needless to say, I'm a home grown product who even attended both Cal State, Hayward and East Bay for my Bachelor's and Master's Degrees, respectively. My goal and purpose as a School Counselor is to provide individualized academic, personal/social, and career support for every student on both campuses in preparation for the excitement and challenges of adulthood. This process of "preparation and support" is a collaborative effort that requires engagement and advocacy from students, parents/guardians, educators, and community stakeholders, so I look forward to nurturing our village to help our students reach their goals. Services offered:
Individual counseling - Meet one-on-one to discuss personal/social challenges and develop coping strategies.
Academic counseling - Support academic skill development, academic literacy , and students' goal orientation
Career counseling - Assist students with post-secondary education planning, career exploration, and preparation.
Advisory instruction (Mondays at 1:10pm for Bridgepoint only) - guidance lessons covering topics such as professionalism, goal setting, and what it means to live a well-lived life.

Electronic Individualized Learning Plan
The School Counselor develops and shares (Google Sheet) a copy of the electronic Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) illustrated below with each student (grades 10-12) at Bridgepoint and Crossroads. The plan includes graduation requirements for both Alternative High School Programs as well as Newark Memorial. After the School Counselor transcribes the student's transcript (credits only and not grades) onto the ILP (Current Credits column) it reveals the student's current academic standing on the Credits Needed row. A student's current and projected courses are included in the Q1 - Q4 Courses columns while their projected credits are input into the Q1 - Q4 Credits column. From this information we can accurately determine the correct courses and number of credits a student needs for graduation from Bridgepoint, Crossroads, or Newark Memorial. When information is entered onto the Alternative High School Diploma columns, it automatically populates the same information onto the Newark Memorial Diploma columns, so students can see what it would take to return to Newark Memorial if that is their goal.
When reviewing the ILP with each student, the School Counselor assists them in identifying their post-secondary (after high school) goals as well as academic goals for each Quarter and what gives them confidence to believe they can reach those goals (Strengths) as well as obstacles that may sometimes get in the way (Challenges).
Parents are welcome and encouraged to receive a copy of this document and review it with the School Counselor. Please email Mr. Baylon (hbaylon@newarkunified.org) with the email account that you have on file for your student so Mr. Baylon can share their ILP with you.
