Scholar Bowl is an activity in which two teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge, including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, popular culture, sports, and more!
It teaches you to think fast, communicate effectively, and take initiative. You’re challenged to push yourself and never stop learning - and because it's a team sport, you don't need to worry about knowing the answer to every single question. You can focus on an area you’re strong in, or decide to expand your horizons and learn something new.
Scholar Bowl is also a great way to prepare yourself for later academic success. Not only does it help you with your high school study habits (studying for your high school classes is a great way to get better at Scholar Bowl!), but many colleges offer scholarships for Scholar Bowl participants, and it looks great on academic applications!
Like all of the teams at NHS, we're a member of the Big 8 Conference, so we compete in a regular conference season, then the Big 8 Championship in March. We compete at Districts in April, and Sectionals is in early May. We're also part of a league that gives us opportunities to compete against our local non-conference teams - and we try to go to several all-day tournaments throughout the year, including both varsity and junior varsity options.
We also have other events like game nights and holiday parties, and we have been known to help run the "Trivia Room" during NMS Reward Days.
We practice once a week on Monday afternoons from about 3:30 to 5:00 PM. We know that there are a lot of activities offered at NHS, and many of our members also participate in band, choir, or seasonal sports. We're one big family at NHS, so if you've got to miss some practices for other academic or athletic events, we're happy to work with you and your other coaches!
We're not sure yet when we'll hold tryouts for the 2021-2022 season, but they'll probably take place very soon after school starts. Tryouts give us an idea of what you know, how fast you are on the buzzer, and your willingness to commit to practice and competition.
