Nephelie Technologies awarded £1.2M Innovate UK funding to pioneer advanced connectivity for real-time holographic video
Bristol, UK – Nephelie Technologies has been awarded £1.2 million from Innovate UK under the Advanced Connectivity Technologies programme to develop nCOMM+1: a multi-access wireless network for holographic video. The project focuses on advancing the telecoms infrastructure by introducing intelligent, energy-efficient and resilient wireless networking architectures, enabling the seamless delivery of next-generation 3D communications.
nCOMM+1 builds on Nephelie’s pioneering wireless volumetric video work to demonstrate how cutting-edge network protocols, orchestration frameworks, and cloud-native rendering pipelines can support bandwidth-hungry, latency-sensitive applications such as holographic telepresence.
“nCOMM+1 is not just about 3D video — it’s about pushing the boundaries of what wireless networks can deliver,” said Dr Vassilis Seferidis, CEO of Nephelie Technologies. “By combining multi-path connectivity, real-time orchestration, and intelligent resource management, we’re building a networking foundation capable of supporting the immersive applications of tomorrow.”
Key networking innovations
At its core, the nCOMM+1 project introduces a set of breakthroughs in advanced networking that will significantly improve the way data-intensive applications are delivered over wireless networks. The project replaces traditional Multipath TCP with Multipath QUIC, unlocking greater uplink efficiency and better utilisation of bandwidth in dynamic environments. This is complemented by the deployment of an enhanced Multi-Access Technology Real-Time Intelligent Controller (mATRIC), which enables resilient multi-path communication across heterogeneous networks such as 5G and Wi-Fi.
To ensure smooth delivery of high-quality 3D video streams, the project integrates cloud-native rendering acceleration with multi-GPU architectures, reducing rendering time and ensuring synchronised frames in real time. Alongside performance gains, nCOMM+1 embeds robust security and privacy mechanisms into the system and introduces AI-driven energy optimisation that makes network orchestration and rendering processes more sustainable. Together, these innovations create a secure, intelligent, and efficient networking platform ready to support the immersive digital services of the future.
Showcasing UK leadership in connectivity
A live demonstrator will be deployed at the Bristol Digital Futures Institute, in partnership with the Smart Internet Lab at the University of Bristol, underscoring the role of advanced telecoms in enabling immersive digital experiences.
Prof. Dimitra Simeonidou, Director of the Smart Internet Lab, University of Bristol, said:
“This project is a significant milestone in the evolution of advanced wireless networks. By embedding intelligence and resilience into the core of connectivity, nCOMM+1 demonstrates how the UK can lead in shaping the telecoms infrastructure required for real-time immersive applications. It highlights the essential role of advanced networking in unlocking the communications technologies of the future.”
Backed by Innovate UK
"Innovate UK, through its Advanced Connectivity Technologies programme delivered on behalf of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology is proud to fund British innovation in next-generation telecoms," said John Goodacre, Director of Secure and Resilient Growth at Innovate UK. "Investments in pioneering companies like Nephelie Technologies, whose nCOMM+1 project exemplifies the transformative potential of advanced networking—such as enabling holographic communication—are central to the Government's mission to secure the UK’s leadership in global digital infrastructure for the decade ahead."
Part of a national telecoms drive
nCOMM+1 is one of 11 cutting-edge telecoms projects awarded a share of £13 million in government funding through Innovate UK. The programme is accelerating the commercialisation of advanced connectivity technologies, supporting the UK government’s Industrial Strategy and its mission to improve digital connectivity, bridge the digital divide, and grow domestic technology ecosystems.
