Think Like a Fact Checker

Distance Learning Self-Paced Modules & Digital Breakouts

Project Overview

Think Like a Fact Checker is a student-centered, self-paced interactive module (for ES/MS/HS levels) which leads into the Fact Checker Challenge digital Breakout for use with your students during our current COVID-19 quarantine and school closure period.

Hello Librarians, Teachers, Media/Curriculum/Technology Specialists:

Think Like a Fact Checker is a student-centered, self-paced interactive module (for ES/MS/HS levels) which leads into the Fact Checker Challenge digital Breakout for use with your students during our current COVID-19 quarantine and school closure period.

These modules and breakouts utilize research-based fact-checking skills to teach essential news/media literacy with real COVID-19 news and misinformation. Throughout the activity, students are encouraged to explore, investigate, and to ultimately consider their own personal use of digital information.

Designed by North East ISD Library Media Specialists/Teacher-Librarians Teresa Diaz, Michelle Lewis, and Rachel McDevitt, these resources are specifically for librarians and other educators to use, adapt and share with their students during this current distance learning period.

As school library media specialists, we wanted to help develop students' Information Literacy skills across all media, including news encountered on social media. Knowing how to identify inaccurate, misleading, or even intentional disinformation is an essential, real-world skill—actually, a very real world skill for the new normal we find ourselves in right now.

PLEASE provide any feedback that you wish to share as your students progress through the activities. Your feedback is invaluable for the creation of additional distance learning opportunities.

Please see the other pages on this site for access to and suggested use of the resources.

Thank you for taking the time to offer this to your students!

Sincerely,

Teresa Diaz, Michelle Lewis, Rachel McDevitt
