Prerequisites: Experience within the weight room prior to high school within the summer strength and conditioning program or endorsement from an NJSD staff member (i.e. PE teacher or coach who runs a lifting program) this will ensure safety for the student and a baseline of knowledge of the techniques used for the lifts, spotting, and other expectations within the weight room.
Course content: This freshman-level course is designed to build a strong foundation in fitness, health, and personal wellness. Students will explore the principles of strength training, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, and overall healthy living through a variety of engaging activities in the gym, weight room, and outdoors. Emphasis will be placed on developing safe exercise techniques, improving personal fitness, and creating healthy habits that support lifelong physical activity. In addition to hands-on training, students will learn about the importance of nutrition, hydration, sleep, and recovery. Regular fitness testing and goal setting will help students track progress and take ownership of their personal health.
Course Activities: Students will partake in fitness testing and health-related components related to assessing personal health and attaining the goal of living a physically active lifestyle into adulthood. Concepts discussed in this course will include nutrition, sleep, hydration, flexibility, range of motion, muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiovascular training, and body composition.
