Writing Goals
Grammar and Mechanics
- Every sentence begins with a capital letter.
- Titles, names, and proper nouns are capitalized.
- At the end of every sentence, there is a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.
- Quotation marks are included where needed.
- Each paragraph is indented.
- Each paragraph focuses on one idea or topic.
- Each paragraph has a beginning sentence, sentences with supporting details, and a concluding sentence.
- Each sentence is a complete thought with a subject and a predicate.
- Use linking words. (e.g. for instance, in order to, in addition, another, for example, also, because)
- Plurals are used correctly (s or es or 's)
- Subjects and verbs agree. (she is, they are, etc.)
- Words are spelled correctly.
- Commas are used correctly.
Write to Persuade
- Introduce a topic and state a clear opinion.
- Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details.
- Provide a concluding statement relating to the opinion.
Write to Inform
- Introduce a topic clearly.
- Develop the topic with facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples related to the topic.
- Use precise language and vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
- Provide a concluding statement relate to the information or explanation given.
Write to Entertain
- Introduce a situation, narrator and/or characters.
- Use dialogue and description to develop experiences and events or show the responses of characters to situations.
- Use concrete words and phrases and sensory details to convey experiences and events precisely.
- Provide a conclusion that follows from the narrated experiences or events.
