Overview

The Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures (CSLC) invites you to submit a 300-word proposal for the 2022 conference: Fostering a Community of Cultures Through Intercultural Competence. By bringing together researchers, educators, and experts across languages to present their case studies, research findings and classroom activities, this conference will facilitate a meaningful exchange around the topic of intercultural competence in higher education and thereby inform foreign language curriculums. As a community, we must continue to encourage student personal growth through the study of foreign languages and cultures and seek innovative solutions to achieve that goal.

At the University of Notre Dame, we are looking to reframe the idea that students should learn a language to satisfy a requirement or to study abroad into one that fosters a love of languages and cultures as foreign languages and cultures are crucial to the development of global and interculturally competent citizens.

Areas of Interest

Areas of interest for presentations include, but are not limited to, the following questions:

  • In what ways can we reframe the role of foreign languages and cultures in higher education?

  • What are the effects of teaching intercultural competence in the foreign language and culture classroom?

  • How do study abroad programs impact our students’ intercultural competence?

  • How are foreign language and culture classes and/or study abroad experiences helping our students develop their intercultural competence and empathy?

Proposal Guidelines

Your proposal should be in an abstract format that includes a concise description of the purpose, methods and implications of your topic. The following guidelines are provided for submitters:

  • Abstracts should be a single paragraph no more than 300 words in length.

  • Each abstract submission should contain the full name of principal presenter(s) along with affiliation and email address. We encourage graduate students to submit an abstract as well. NOTE: This is not included in the word count.

  • Do not include citations but if you must refer to sources, please write so that use of a reference is not required (e.g., “Paula Garret-Rucks’ ‘Intercultural Competence in Instructed Language Learning’”)

  • Proposal should be in one of the following file types: .pdf, .docx, .rtf). Please do not submit a url (i.e., Google Doc). File size limit is 10 MB.
