Collage

This collage was my first idea for the Un-essay because I wanted a visual representation of the large differences in how the media refers to male and female athletes. The Sports Illustrated covers show two well known athletes, Alex Morgan (left) and Michael Phelps (right). I find it interesting that they are both Olympic athletes and yet Phelps' achievements are on full display while Morgan's abs are the focus of her cover. Another key aspect of this collage is the article headlines describing male and female athletes, such as outbursts by tennis players Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic. These two headlines are especially interesting, because Williams is described as a monster while Djokovic has a "complicated reputation." Other article headlines include the comparisons between male and female Olympic skateboarding headlines and more sexist comments about women in sports. Lastly, I included this Tweet because I hear this argument constantly that any younger men's soccer team would beat the Women's U.S. Soccer team in a heartbeat, and I fundamentally disagree. I also find it comical that a random person with no famous soccer background is making this claim, yet it shows how deep sexism in sport is that it permeates through to, and is highly supported by, the fans.
