This group deals with topics involving mixtures of gases and particles. Examples include the dynamics of aerosol formation and characterization diagnostics, particle transport and deposition, liquid-metal magneto-hydrodynamic heat transfer, single and two-phase magneto-hydrodynamic flows, and ionized gases (plasmas). Particle deposition has a major impact on the fabrication of integrated circuits.
Plasmas have an overlap with the flow control group through our development of plasma flow actuators. These are thought to hold the best promise for high-speed flow control on next generation supersonic aircraft. This is expected to be a growing area because of the increasing interest in plasmas for a variety of aerospace applications.
Funding in this area presently comes to us from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Army Research Office.
